How do you test an ac clutch? i have heard something about jumping it to the battery but havent gotten any actual specifics on how to do it. i want to test it as soon as i can because my truck is supposed to go in tomorrow to have the compressor replaced. thanks for the help
Before you run the test you need to check the air gap between the pulley (5)
and clutch (2), it should be .015 inch max. If not remove the center bolt (3),
the clutch will then come off. Remove the one of the thinnest shims (4).
NOTE: The gap can be anything smaller than .015 as long as the clutch doesn't
rub the pulley when the clutch is disengaged with the engine running. Try to
get the smallest gap you can, it will last the longest.
BTW: You put the power and ground to both tabs on the clutch.
The black wire is ground (-), the grey w/white stripe is power (+)
Thanks Cuda I will check out the gap when I get to my buddies place. I noticed this morning that the clutch is either not engaging or having a heck of a time before it does so i am hoping that its the clutch not the compressor. in the 1.5 hours i messed with it the pulley never locked up except it stuttered when the clutch tried to engage...
I'll bet on the air gap being too big. You might make the clutch engage by hitting it with a screwdriver handle while running.
If it engages, the gap is too big.
