I was waiting for a red light and some kid in a civic started to rev his engine. I tried to do the same thing in park, but the RPM would not go past 3 it would go from 3 to 2.5 back and forth. the expy is a 2005 5.4 3v engine. with 91,000 miles. just wanted to know if anyone with a 3v engine has the same problem. my 2000 5.4 2v expy does not do this.

 

It's not a problem-it's a kind of neutral rev limiter to keep you from doing what the punk in the civic was.

Yep, it's a safety feature to protect you from yourself. An engine that is reved up past 3K without a load on it can slam pistons up into the head and destroy the engine.

 

when did ford start doing this? My 2000 5.4 does Not do it.

 

That started with the drive-by wire trucks. It has to do with the torque limiting programming. The neutral rev limiter was always there in some strategies, it just wasn't used very much.
