After looking at my truck for the last 5 years and not doing a thing. I have finally got off my a**. I just got my industrial chassis dakota cross member. My air ride tech four link is on it's way. I am going to the junk yard to pick up my explorer rear end next weekend. My question is what do I want to keep and what do I not want when I take it out?
I would make sure that it isn't just ripped out. My dad thinks everything should be taken out with an acetylene torch. Haha. So I didn't have the sway bar to know if it could be afixed to my frame. He also cut the tube that ran to the rear brakes. Not that it's too expensive ($9), but it's still money that could have been saved for something else down the line.
As for the tie down plates and U-bolts, I didn't even use them off of the explorer. I bought aftermarket ones to put on there. I don't know if you plan on mounting the rear end on top or bottom of your springs. In the explorer, they mount on top of the springs. I wanted mine mounted on the bottome, so I ended up cutting off the leaf springs perches, and welding new ones onto the top. I still haven't solved the sway bar problem, but did find a good use for the spot that the sway bar mounts onto the rear end. I am using one of the holes there to mount the shock, and then added a crossmember above that to mount them to the frame.
I am going with a 4 bar type setup so I am not so concerned with u bolts. I am not even sure about a sway bar?
did you get the parallel 4 bar (with panhard bar) or the triangulated 4 bar?
you will want a sway bar, specially with the air shocks.
and you have to decide how you want the air system setup.
if you go with one fill and one drain valve for the entire rear end (my setup as well), then the sway bar wil be really instrumental in keeping roll down (the air flows to the high bag (inside turn) from the low bag (outside turn).
but you can mitigate this some with separate valve setups per bag. 1 each fill & drain.

I am going triangle no air though. I am going to get one with disc's. What about brake parts?
