Dont Forget the Thermostat. Heat is the enemy of these engines. Make sure you change this every time you flush, every two years.

 

Well, I have a 2000 F-150 Lariat 2WD, and it has 365,058 miles on it as of this morning. Last summer I put in a rebuilt tranny myself. I had never tried to replace a transmission before. It was actually easier than I thought. But I truly love my truck. I just wish it got better gas mileage because I drive a lot. But this truck is strong and has a lot of life still left in it. 5.4 liter Triton V-8 is the best engine Ford has ever made. I just hope their upcoming Diesel engine is half as good as this one. Planning on driving till 400K and then probably retiring the Lariat to the back spot on the driveway. (I'll never sell her) I'm a FORD MAN. and counting........

 

Glad to hear it,my ole 97 had 168,000 on the clock,and was still running strong when I traded her in.I was impressed since it was the 4.2 v-6.I now have an 07 with the same powertrain with less than 40,000. Hopefully she,ll hang in there until I retire.I do miss the ole girl....BTW welcome to our world!

 

I love my 2000 Lariat Supercab 5.4 4x4 (209,000) much more than my 2004 XLT Supercab 5.4 (3v) 4x4 (168,000). As people have said, the 2000 runs and drives like new. I'm in the middle of cleaning my throttle body and have been poking around the forum researching how to remove the EGR valve from the throttle body.

 

I bought my 2001 super crew with the 5.4 jest after christmas with 145K miles on it the steering , suspension and interior certainly don't look like that kind of miles and the engine, tranny and transfer case all run smooth. I did a lot of looking around before I settled on the super crew cause I wanted a truck I could live with for a very long time. I am glad to say I am 110% sure I made the right decision. I don't put a lot of miles on per year so I expect this truck will be with me a very long time.

 

Man this thread's got legs! Nearly 3 years ago my reply was:

"My '98 4X4 XLT 4.6 SuperCab just turned 12,700 miles & I still don't like it, never have. Recently reintensified my efforts to transform this exceptional condition 10 YO F-150 pickup into an E-150 Club Wagon. Its hard to find a loaded 1 w/sliding side door."

Little has changed, nobody bought my '98 that just turned 34,000 miles & still haven't found an E-150 Club Wagon w/sliding door to replace it. Wonder if there's another '98 w/less than 35,000 miles?

Only a few small issues. Nearly 14 YO original Firestone tires still looked exc & had exc tread, but became casualties of belt separation. The worst out of rounds, caused by lousy roads & excess loads. Rotated fronts out 1st put on Michelins. Wasn't long before belts led to new Firestones.

Then gremlins got to power mirrors & wiper delay. Mirror refused to move in right direction, then wouldn't move at all. Traced to Pepsi Syndrome in armrest switch. Was able to snap Joy Stick apart, w/o small bits spinning off into space. Was EZ PZ to see where copper contacts corroded, clean same & reass. AOK.

Wipers more mysterious. Worked fine parked/motor off. Driving, each delay position made single sweep, lo spd was 1 delay spd & hi spd was lo spd? Suspected GEM, didn't have time to do Open Heart Surgery, but disturbed it checking connections. Wipers have worked perfectly ever since.

Biggest gripe is still cleaning the rear glass, b/c of the DeLux fiber glass cap. Had a couple of ideas to make special tool to wash glass in unreachable gap. But never put it all together. Unbolt cap, stand up inside to lift it & slide it back, just to clean glass.

Was up North during the hurricanes last Summer. Got a couple of peculiar little dents to remember the storms. The biggest, the size of half an almond, is a few inches ahead of antenna. Whatever hit it must've been moving!

 

bought 01 xlt in 03, 53k on it. now has 155k. 20 or 25k pulling 26 ft trailer around the country. normal maintenance, rear axle lube at 100k, front brakes, rear brakes pending,shocks,sway bar links,rear view mirror fell off, a tail light bulb. been driving 61 years, best vehicle ive ever owned.

 

just sold my 1999 , 266,000 miles on it ran great still, swapped rear ends out at 245,000 miles after hauling boats, bob cats, trailers while doing work, normal maint. 1alternator, cpl batteries,battery wiring harness at 230,000 miles, other then that still sold it for $2400.00, no complaints here

Love my 01 Supercrew!! Bought it used about 4 yrs ago with 85k on it...Now I have 125k...I love it! Just normal stuff..brakes...rotors..I also have the dreaded slipjoint driveshaft "clunk"...Still rides great!! Wish the paint job wasn't garabge! I have the Wedgewood Blue and it has all these "check" marks in the paint...I'm gonna drive her to the wheels fall off!!

 

2001 Supercrew here, 4.6, 190,000 miles, runs and rides like she has 50K.

No broken interior trim pieces, feels rock solid and rattle free, steering is still tight and responsive, interior has held up GREAT, engine runs smooth as silk (and doesn't burn a drop of oil), trans shifts like day 1, paint is still super glossy and in good shape (no garage either), she rolls down the road just as smooth and quiet as ANY of the new trucks even if she takes a little longer getting up to speed. :-)

In fact I drove a brand new 2011 5.0 F150, and while I LOVED that truck and the 5.0 was a flat screamer compared to my 4.6 2V, when I got back into my truck I was shocked at how similar they actually feel as far as overall NVH of powertrain and ride.

I love my truck, and even though I keep telling myself this thing has almost 200K and I wouldn't mind a truck with another few thousand pounds of towing capacity I can't make myself spend the money. The '01 hasn't let me down, I trust it, the body/interior/powertrain are aging incredibly well, so I just can't make myself part with it just yet.

I would drive this truck across the country tomorrow without a second thought, that's why I love my Ford truck.

Michelin LTX M/Ss get an honorable mention, they are an F150's best friend. I got 135K out of a set and have moved on to the LTX M/S2s, aside from wearing like granite that tire compliments the 2WD F150's ride/handling like nothing else.

In 190K (other than regular maintenance):
-4 ignition coils
-A/C compressor clutch
-cleaned EGR ports
-home repaired the cupholder release spring with two 1.5" sheetmetal screws
-Even though this is really regular maintenance... rebuilt the front end at around 170K (used Moog for everything). Changed upper control arms/lower ball joints, outer tie rod ends, sway bar end links, idler arm and pitman arm.
-original brake pads lasted 120K, not all highway or unloaded mileage either

Next up: Bilstein shocks (still on the originals)

 

1997 5.4L LWB 4x4 Off Road, standard cab , 193,000 miles

Ordered this truck new, and waited about 5 months as this was one of the first 5.4L F150s. (Really wanted the 5.4, not the 4.6)

5 rear ends between 35,000 and 65,000 miles. This one has stayed together, but there's a bad vibration in it at highways speeds.
6 COPs. cylinders 4&8 each got 2. 2&3 each got 1.
A/C compressor at 85K. The clutch burned up and I chose to replace the compressor, too.
3 radiators.
2 starters.
1 set ball joints.

It really is the best engineered vehicle that I've ever owned. If it weren't for the rear ends, I'd still be all grins.

 

I have a 2004 Heritage Supercab with the 4.6. There is 320,000km on it so far. 90% of that is highway but it also spent weeks at a time with the engine running while parked for 10 hour days while I worked at the side of the highway splicing fiber optic cable.
It has had 2 sets of brakes, 2 transmission fluid changes, 1 sparkplug change, 1 replaced battery, 1 replaced u-joint, 2 diff fluid changes, new ball joints, at least 1 coolant change, about 3 sets of tires and 1 new windshield. I did have to replace the steering box (leaked due to a crack) but that was pretty much the only real failure.
I love this truck.

 

i got a 2001 f 150 king ranch and i already got 250k on her and she runs just about perfect, had to rebuild the tranny but its good now. i do a lot of heavy off orading too and it loves taking the beating

 

ok my 97 4.6 4x4 was driven to 340 k then sold for 2002 4.6 4x4 then driven to 300k and sold for a 2011 4x4, my son has a 98 5.4 4x4.
all great trucks, no piddly little things broke. driven hard - lots of logging road travel
aside from brakes/tires heres what we have done, between them all;
4 front wheel bearings (yes live on the wet coast)
one control arm,
3 tie rod ends
3 u-joints
one alternator
temperature reg switch
1 blown plug - fixed with helicoil
yes got the ford head leak on both 4.6's, was never fatal, just a small dribble cooling off
never got stranded!
