Long Tube header issues.

I purchased some long tube headers for my f100 302. Says plainly that it will work on this year and model of truck with this engine. I'm not new to modifications and I'm all for doing some changes to get this to work and I may be putting a tranny cooler in to get rid of the hardlines that are not helping this at all.

Does anyone have some experience putting long tube headers into these trucks and any tricks of the trade?

Been a while sents I did it. you'll have to unbolt motor mounts and jack up engine I think pass goes in from bottom not sure aboat driver side I think from top.

Installing headers is like a puzzle sometimes. Just about when you are ready to call it quits, your knuckles are a little bloody and when you've just had enough and slam your fists down onto the fender in rage they all of a sudden just "fall" into place.

Not sure about a 302, but on an FE 2wd, the driver's side snakes in from the bottom, the passenger side can be snaked in from the top. Strangley with the pass side header, you have to unbolt the starter sometimes, other times you don't. Hmmm...

Driver side drops in from the top. I believe you can do pass. side from top as well but for passenger side you have to disconnect motor mount and tilt motor up toward driver side.

I have installed lots of headers on these trucks, the dentsides ,bumpsides ,and slicks!
I have posted a lot of info. here on FTE I will just add some links to some of the info.
Please keep in mind that 65-79 engine compartments are basically the same when installing headers!

When I put mine on my truck I did put the drivers side in from the top and the passenger side in from the bottom. I cut the transmission hard lines and replaced them with some approved rubber lines to get them out of the way. And yes you do have to undo the passenger side motor mount from the perch and jack the engine. IIRC I took the starter off to get some extra room too. And I took the radius arm cross member out too.
Another problem your gonna have after you get them in is the transmission cross member. I bought a set of hedman collector extenders which are just long collectors with an S bend in them to get the exhaust routed up and over the trans crossmember. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku Good luck with it, it's a PITA but worth it!

I basically did everything you said here except the cross member and got it in. The driver's side was super easy to get in from the bottom. I finally got the passenger side in from the top with cutting the transmission cooling lines and using rubber tubing. ... and PITA would be an understatement.

I Just got done installing some Summit Longtubes onto my 79 F100 with a 302/c6. Biggest nightmare ever! had to beat the hell out of two of the tubes and the collector on the passenger side. Also had to cut the 3-bolt flange off and just weld a straight pipe onto the header. It's a real tight fit to the trans. Drivers side went in ok but I had to modify the shifter linkage.

Moral of the story is don't buy cheap ones! Spend the money on a good set and you will be extremely happy you did.

when I put my dynomax ones on I had to put both in from the top,the tranny cooler lines were close but not in the way as much as just about everything else on the passenger side.I had to undo both motors mounts, remove the shroud, notch the radius arm crossmember with the plasma and take out my tranny crossmemeber to notch and flip it.there a pain for sure, but worth it.the ones you bought for yours jturkey should fit,the C6 is bigger, but it still is bolted to the 302 and the bellhousing won't be any wider I would think.I know mine the collectors were about 2 inches from the tranny crossmember.

I'm putting my Flowtech headers in next month, I'll make sure to take lots of pictures for everyone although Wally's pictures are already pretty damn good for the cross member

On my 77 302 the driver side went smooth I had to remove the... Z-Bar "sorry about the slang I don't know the real name, it engages the clutch" and it dropped right in. on the passenger side I didn't jack the engine, instead I had to remove the starter and unbolt, on the passenger side, the frames cross member that goes under the collector on the headers. I could then pull it far enough towards the rear of the truck to drop the header in from the top. I don't know but jacking the engine may have been easier but I got it done.

Yeah, pass side from the bottom, drivers from the top and GOTTA unbolt the engine and jack it up a few, and u may have to dent them to fit past the mounts and/or starter, and watch out for the trans crossmember....................... I'll post pix, mine aint perfect and wasnt the greatest of ideas

I bought the summit dynomax and had a helluva time too. Driver and passenger side from the top, removed starter, dented two tubes on driver side to get by the manual steering box...390 FE...Oh yeah, busted 3 mainfold bolts.
