large single or dual exhaust system?

I just have a single exhaust system right now but was thinking duals, or mabey a large 3" or bigger single exhaust. Would dual exhaust be alot better than a large single??. I was just thinking that if there wasn't much difference it might be cheaper to go with the single.

Oh yeah its a 79 F-250 with a 400m

Any ideas?

Thanks Joe

In all truth and reality, 3 inch exhaust is for High HP engines. Yours would probably do just as good with 2 1/4 or maybe 2 1/2 inch. I have a single in dual out system on my 88 F-150, and it does really well in the breathing department. Mine is a free flowing system which is all custom built. High flow catalytic convertor, and a flowmaster single in, dual out muffler. I also have a set of shorty headers, and a set of 3 1/2 inch diameter tips that are 24 inches long, they give it the deeper tone, rather than the raucous, popping I got with my 66 Mustang with dual flowmasters and turn downs behind the roll pan.

1988 F-150, SWB, 5.0 EFI (formerly 4.9 EFI), M5OD 5 speed, 3.08 gears, Summit shorty truck headers, Custom built Flowmaster exhaust system. Force 4 LP6000 lightbar, Federal signal PA-300 100 watt siren, Icom IC-V100 50 watt mobile radio.

1965 F-100 (just purchased 1/18/01), SWB, 390, C-6 auto. Dual exhaust, Not much else to do to it.

Can see both below.

do your self a favor now and install true dual 2 1/2or 2 1/4in (dont go to extream size on a stock engine).with single exhast your left head tends to ge hotter because the left pipe has to mix with the other pipe, Dual helps to equilize the back pressure between the two better the a single,

I was just at a muffler shop yesterday, and they recommended 2 1/4 for my 65! It has a 390 and they told me that, turn on a water hose, see how much flow comes out of it, then turn the same faucet on and hook a 3 inch pipe up to it. You get the same flow either way. 3 inch is really more for race engines and for short runs off of those engines.

My advice, follow what the other guy said and go with either 2.25" or 2.5".

Joe; I have built many a old Fords. we have dynoed many of the ones we have built. Duals are nice to look at,But they dont really produce any power.First off if you dont have a "H" pipe you actually lose on the touque end of scale, with minable gain in HP.There is many a good exhaust sys. out there.Summit has them, Remember Joe no matter how many cyl.you have only one pulse goes thru the muffler at a time.so go ahead and use the 2.5in.pipe.But use a good quality sys. hopes this helps you out.Redeye

large single or dual exhaust system?

Actually tonight I just bought a dual exhaust system from a guy, it was a pretty good deal. What exactly is a H pipe is it just that a pipe that joins the exhaust together, and can this be added on later??.

The exhaust I just bought uses 2" pipe, but I may replace the mufflers with better ones. would this be better than a single 2.5"??

Thanks alot

Joe

Joe; If you deal Summit you will find a kit for an "H" pipe.yes it is a pipe that goes across from one pipe to the other.and this alone will equal out the back press in the system.Get under the truck and eyeball the situp.I think the last kit I installed,Had instruction with it.the closer to the engine the better it will breath.you will notice a better sound also.Yes you can put it on after instllion. But it may be a little harder.I hope this helps you out Redeye

[link:www.summitracing.com|Summit Racing Equipment]

[link:www.jegs.com|Jegs] Try them too, same stuff, maybe a little cheaper at times. Both places have online catalogs.

Actually you could probably get a muffler shop to make you up an H-pipe for about the same price. I got a quote the other day to do an entire system for my 65 F-100 of $500. The guy is nuts! 2 three chamber flowmasters would have cost me $100 Each from this guy. Needless to say I'm not going back to them for anything.
