ID what year my 351 W is?

My '77 has a 351 W in it that the last owner swaped in. It's seized up from sitting and I figure i'll just do a engine rebuilt since it's not a daily driver. No biggie right, HA, the windsor didnt come in that truck and I dont know what the motor came from or year.

I know what your thinking, just contact the old owner and ask... He passed away the day I baught it and I baught it from his family. They dont know anything about it.

It's a carb'ed 351 W, but i dont know what type of vehicle it came from nor a year, so what rebuild kit would i buy or how do I identify it?

Look for the block casting number down by the starter and post it here.

I have the same situation. What do the labels on the head refer to?

This label says: Engine Family: 5.8w"d" (2XR124)
and the other end of the same valve cover there is a label that has the letters:
KF390AA
and in bigger letters: C12e

I'll get the block numbers tonight.

That's a smog equipment label, doesn't really say much about the motor though. Maybe move the plug wires out of the way and try to get a better pic of all of it.

Those are just stickers on the valve cover. It doesn't necessarily tell you much about the engine.

Conanski, I just want to say, you know your *****! I've been reading your post's in the engine section. Plus, I found the block's casting number in less than 3 minutes after you said where it was. Couldnt get the number tonight since it needs to be cleaned off, but i'll post it soon.

That emissions sticker will almost certainly say something like:

"This vehicle conforms to exhaust emissions requirements for ____ model year vehicles".

It will also have a decal part number on it somewhere which will encode a year date.

The decal gives a spark plug gap of .048-.052, which implies an electronic ignition, ergo 1975-up. Anyhow, dust off the snow and post a picture of the whole decal.

Do any of these help? The block by the starter is completely caked with grime so it's going to be a couple of days before I can get it all cleaned up to read it (it was -20degrees here for the past few days)

I think that valve cover sticker will actually have a year, perhaps on the bottom left. However like others have mentioned, the valve covers could have been changed.

Good luck!

dwardle:
The third picture in your latest post, near the bottom, has a D9WE.....AB(or D) number on it which is a decal part number, corresponding to 1979 model year. So the valve cover is from a 1979 or newer engine. Before this there is written ...REGULATIONS APPLICABLE...NEW MOTOR VEHICLES. Does it say what year new motor vehicles there?

Hopefully you'll get some warm weather to work on that motor. No fun trying to start up an old motor in freezing weather!

Mine might have to as well, it's never fun is it Dforgy

I got a distributor that looked very new from a junkyard today, but I think it was from a 460... no chance these two engines use the same distributor is there?
