My understanding that it should be CI rated for diesels. I use it as my winter oil in my 6.0 and I get from my local Ford dealer.

The 6.4 needs CJ rated oil for less soot build up because of the DPF.

Use only CJ-4 rated oil in the 6.4. I would reccomend Rotella T CJ-4 15-40w oil for the warmer months or in the south all year.

The API of SM is a rating for a gas engine. The S stands for spark ignition and the M is the rating. You need an oil with the CJ rating on it. The C stands for compression ignition as in a diesel engine. Most good oil have both ratings but make sure it has CJ or CJ-4, something like that. Some will say CI or CI-plus, don't use it! Stick with CJ

You can also use a 5W40 oil. Rotella, Mobil-1 (most commonly available) and others make CJ rated synthetic 5W40 oils. If you plan to tow any I would recommend this over a 10W30.

I just reviewed the CD disc that came with my truck. The answer to your question is definitely NO.

You need to use CJ - 4 or better.

Average temperature of 80 degree farenheit and above 20 degrees they Ford recommends viscosity of 15W - 40.

There are many variables as to viscosity, but not that many as to QUALITY: CJ - 4 API or better.
