Had a "Oh crap " moment

Let me start by saying the weather in Pa has been cold and icy now for more than 2 weeks. My driveway has been pretty much a sheet of ice for a while. Off the road its got a grade to it but levels out somewhat towards the garage. That is where I usually park. On Saturday I unlocked the hubs before leaving work to give the U-joints a rest since they've been locked in for a month. In a hurry to get in the house and eat dinner before going to my neices birthday party, I only got the truck in about half way. Jumped out and into the house to grub a sandwich. Maybe 10 min. later the wife & I start to hear horns beeping goin past the house. 1 or 2 is not uncommon because it seems everbody knows somebody in the neighborhood. After the 4th or 5th beep my wife was heading to the front window, on the way it hit me. I asked her if my truck was sitting in the middle of the road, jokingly. She said "Ah, yea!!!". The old shortbed took about a 30 foot slide straight down to the road. Luckily the blacktop was fairly dry and as soon as the rubber hit the road it stopped. I locked the hubs and fired it up and got it all the way back in the driveway with 5 or 6 cars waiting to see the idiot who let his truck slide out of his driveway. This could have been pretty serious but no one was hurt and no damage was done. Wish I could have actually seen it happen.

That is funny, I leave mine locked in from deer season to Easter, unless I take it for a drive down the hill.
I remember as a kid in Missouri, we had a nice ice storm, and me and my friend were driving around town in the parking lots doing donuts, when we decided to go to MCD's, well we drive into the parking lot nice and slow, pull up and park, I shut it down and left it in gear, we get out, and as I slammed the door, my truck starts sliding downhill,,, and being the big strong 145lbs I was at the time, I decided to hold onto the door handle and stop it,,, NOT took me down 15' with it, nice and slow and missed everything! You almost might be glad you DIDn'T see it!!

When I got to the party we all had a good laugh about it. Havent seen any of the neighbors yet, so I dont know if anybody actually saw it slide. I'd hate to be the guy driving along and seeing a truck pull out in front of you and realizing theirs no body in it. Hey pickup that would've been good on Funniest Home Videos. That reminds me of when I was 7 or 8 and my dad was working on a car on ramps in the garage. Our driveway had a good slope down into the garage. Well the car some how rolled off the ramps and all 80 lbs. of me jumped in front of it to stop it. The car stopped about 15 feet away cause I was up hill from it. The car did no damage but my dad chewed me out and sent me in the house. Even tho Im pretty sure I was playing Superman I went in ballin my eyes out. HAHA

i hope you got some sand down on the driveway now ,or some de-icer. i don't think you could luck out twice and not have some sort of carnage.good to hear there were no damages. here's my similar story- my kids were 3 and 4 years old my wife put them in the car to go shopping. she forgot her purse on the kitchen table,so back in the house she went. kids climb into the front seat, and pop the shifter into neutral some how. car rolls ahead 5 feet into front door of the house.wife goes to the front door, opens it up and there's a car up against the house. the kids had big eyes and scared looks on their faces. next day i put a curb in the driveway, lol

78workhorse, im not too happy with the weather either. we got snow in december, and it still is covering our lawn. we had are 14-18 inches over 3 weeks.you couldn't buy a snow shovel or de-icer,if you tried everwhere was sold out. its pretty unusual for us to get much snow.it normally lasts a few day, then turns to slush. its melting good now. bring on the warm summer sun!!!

Comming from another PA guy, just this last Sunday after the Super bowl, my freind followed me back to my house, to help me carry my '78 F-150's hood into the garage from outside since it was supposed to snow monday. I parked my 2wd '03 S-10 in front of my garage...on the steep hill. E brake on, in gear (stick) So we were in there bs'in about my Ford project when we hear a noise. Never heard that kind of rumble before? Went running out and here my chevy slid backwards for 20ft till it caught the back wheels in the rutt @ the bottom of the turn (dirt driveway). It stoped 2 ft away from a big ol oak tree!

Yep, I hear ya, I am so ready for the sumemr to get here. We got that hard crust on the snow and my boxer can't hardly even walk on it. Funny, you let him out and he walks out, has a look at it and turns around and wants to go back inside!

LOL back when I had my old Dodge for whatever reason I left it in 2nd gear with parking brake on in my driveway on incline. I was watching TV and I heard a pop, but didn't think anything of it. I was eating breakfast and looked out window and thought my truck moved a bit. Took a minute or two to realize it was slowly creeping toward the road. I had no idea why the parking brake released itself. It didn't end bad thankfully. If it hurt someone I would have felt really bad, but luckily I was able to laugh about it. Since then I always turn my wheel so it won't roll out into road.

Talking About 8 years ago.

My wife and I stopped at a restaurant to have some lunch, I was driving a 1990 F150 we sat down and ordered lunch then we looked out the window as my truck rolled down parking lot (Short like a strip mall) and rolls across the street and starts to roll back then stops on the grass, I guess it popped out of gear(5spd) and I must have forgotten the cardinal rule put parking brake on.

But it was kinda funny, no one was hurt and the truck didn't get hit but folks driving by when it happened were giving the truck the finger and shouting at it for cutting them off, I wonder what was going through their minds when they got close enough to see there was no driver.

I always check now even with automatics.

Rick.
