This mornig I had the truck towed to a local diesel shop that "specializes" on powerstrokes. for about $200 they will do the necessary tests to it to find the source of the problem.

I'm still hoping it is something other than internal mechanical damage. I'll let you guys know what they find.

Just in case, what is the average cost of a used complete powerstroke motor, 99-2002, with about 100-140k miles. I have found some ranging from $2500 - $4000. Does this sound about rigth?

Thanks

Yeah that's not bad -- a new one is $7-$9k. You can get lucky and find one in the $1k-$2k range, too. I think there was one around here that was $1500. Wish you the best of luck!!

I may have sprayed a bit too much. The truck started but as it started to rapidly rev up, I turned the ignition key off, but it continued to rev up. The RPMPs red lined all the way for about 5 seconds or so, and then it turned off.

I tried restarting it again, but the engine appeared to have lost compression. Now it cranks/turns over a lot faster and shakes more than usaul as I turn the key, but it won't start. I immediately saw a small puddle of oil building up on the ground.

Could I have blown a head gasket or something else? I did not get a chance to look too much into it this morning as I am at work rigth now. But I think I saw just a little bit of coolant by the head, somewhere behind the alternator area.

Please HELP!

Alex
I just found this thread.
I think the puddle of oil on the ground is the reason it wouldn't start in the first place and not the end result of the over-rev.
Despite ether's bad reputation, and also what your motor just went through I wouldn't say the motor is shot just yet. I think you might have an HPOP leak at one of the hoses.
The easy cranking right after the "event" was probably dried out piston rings because of the ether and they lost thier ability to seal. I've seen it before on flooded gas engines, the compression comes back as soon as you restore the oil to the rings.
.
Nice pictures of your truck too.

I THINK I HAVE SOME VERY NICE NEWS. I got a call from the shop. They got it started. They plugged in the scanner and the cam sensor came up. They tapped on it a few times and the truck came back to life right away. One of the batteries is also bad so it is getting replaced.

They had not taken it out for a spin yet when they called me but said everything appears to be running normal. I'm crossing my fingers. I'm picking it up this afternoon.

This is the BEST news I've heard...this year! Towing and diagnostic and parts will come out to about $400. Not bad compared to several thousand.

I'll let you guys know how it goes.

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR FEEDBACK and COMMENTS!!

That is some good news. I hope everything works out good for You. I would replace that cam sensor pretty soon. They will go out while driving also.

Good luck with it.

That cam sensor is under a ford recall and shouldn't cost you anything if it hasn't already been done.

Well, picked it up. Running like new. No water in the oil. Replaced the cam sensor and battery. Everything seems to be running fine.

Apparently I damaged the sensor when the engine reved up so fast.

This is real good news.

Thanks for all your help guys. This shop turned out very honest. They could have very easily taken me for a ride.

The shop is called Tony's Truck Repair in Modesto Ca. just in case you live in the area and need help.
