burning out glasspacks

hey all--
just a general question: when you talk about burning out glasspacks, what exactly are you talking about and how does it modify the way they sound? if memory serves me correctly, fiberglass does NOT burn so how can one 'burn-out' a so-called fiberglass glasspack???

burning out glasspacks

"Burning out" the glasspacks doesn't specifically refer to igniting and combusting the fiberglass insulation as, per your point, fiberglass doesn't burn. Rather, over time in most glasspack mufflers, the insulation will become charred and brittle from exposure to heat. Eventually, it will break up and find its way out. With less or no insulation, the mufflers will get considerably louder (lots of growl under acceleration, lots of "blat" and "pop" (not sure if "blat" is a word, though ) under deceleration.)

The break-up/fall-out process of getting the insulation out can be accelerated by a number of methods, one of which was mentioned in an earlier post. Another I've heard of is heating them as much as possible (running a truck wide open) and hosing them down with cold water.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Dec-01 AT 02:07 AM (EST)]U know Ive heard that hosing them SOB's down will break um up too but i tried it in my front yard with a garden hose and I ended up payin $150.00 for my damn right exhaust manifold after the water found its way past the glasspack and cats.Or atleast I think thats what happened but it does sound a little better. I am gonna be brave and try it again soon to see if it breaks up any more but u can bet ure a** ill park on a hill this time.

Ford Nut, it's not called 'burning out', it's called 'blowing out', which is just what they do over time natuarally, or if you use as Sorpioz said, shoot water in them while they're hot to break them down. And Scorpioz, don't turn the water on full. Just slip the hose insto the tailpipe and into the glasspack, and turn the water on very low pressure for a few seconds, just to get it wet in there. Do it on a hill, and make sure you warm your rig up for a good 10 or 15 minutes to make sure the cold water will crack the fiberglass up good. Good luck, and don't burn yourself

burning out glasspacks

This may not be legal, but I dumped a cup of gas in each one and lit it on fire. I let them burn(it took forever)out, and hosed em down. Every so often I would kick them to turn them over for even burn. I hosed em off when they were done to cool them off and installed them. They sounded great.

burning out means that you heat it up and then you put the water hose in it and it shatters...there for you get the popping and thats what the burning is

FYI- unless you are looking at some off brand, no one has used fiberglass in "glasspacks/resonators" in 20+ years

Hey, it died a second death in 2017 before it was brought back to life a second time.

It may not be sane, either.
