Can anyone tell me how much a converter affects transmission performance. For instance I can have my stock 4x4(390 c-6)converter rebuilt by a local shop for 80.00. Or I know of a guy who has his own shop who rebuild converters, and is very reputible but more expensive. He puts in better splines and stators and I guess a few other things. He says one of the more popular ones he rebuilds for 4x4,towing etc runs about 250.00 My question is will a converter improve transmission performance or will it just be stronger?? Im trieng to justify spending 250.00 vs spending 80.00????
First off, the transmission will be the same regardless of the converter.
Now, with a higher stall converter, you will be putting more power into the trans. In addition, you may have shift points which bring the revs below stall, which will cause more slippage and heat. If you really do it right, your stall in 3rd will be high enough to cause slippage and heat at all but freeway speeds.
A good transmission man will consider gearing, load, use etc, and advise you as to how the converter will act and what other mods you should consider.
