Wheel issues

I am so happy I found this page. I have a 96 f150 and got a flat on top of a mountain. Had no spare, had to ride the rim down the hill.
I bought 5x5.5 rims and go figure they didn't fit. I thought I was going crazy.
After reading the comments I have called local tire shops to find my "special" rim..... None to be found anywhere.

So I guess adapter is my only choice?

A 5 on 5.5 Ford rim is "special?" Well, I guess there really weren't all that many Fords made from 1928 (when they started using that bolt pattern) until 1996 (when they stopped), so it shouldn't be surprising that replacements are rare (yes, I'm being sarcastic).

But seriously, it shouldn't be hard getting a 5 on 5.5 rim for a '96 F-150. Why didn't the one you got fit?

.

My mistake I have a 95 F150 the 5x5.5 rim wouldn't fit the lug pattern I have. It was too wide of spacing. So the "special" rim size I need is hard to find. 5x315. Either way it's been a pain. So much so I am junking the thing. I also don't trust the thought of using adapters. Seems unsafe.

I'd be interested in pictures of the wheels and truck to see why you are having such a hard time finding the right pattern.

Very odd. My '95 F-150 had 5 on 5.25 5.5. I know Ford used to use whatever they had on hand when building trucks, but I really can't imagine them having anything other than 5 on 5.5 laying around in '95.

Is this on the front or rear? And do your front and rear match? I wonder if a previous owner swapped a different rear end in it.

(edited to correct bolt circle typo)

Bolded the typo: it would have been 5 on 5.5" like every other '95 F150 that rolled off the line.

And the 2wd's were all the same as the 4wd's in this case? Correct? I seem to remember some years being different, but not others.
The fact that a 96 had the newer 5 on 135 pattern is news to me. I thought the change to metric only came in the '97 model year and that everything from the '96 model year was the traditional 5 on 5.5 pattern.
But a '95 truck should for sure have the old 5.5" pattern. Right?

Just out of curiosity Rose, is yours 2 or 4 wheel drive? Is it the older body style that all 95's and '96's should be? Or does it look more like a '97 when they changed the 150's body style completely?
As a '95, this would be pretty far-fetched. But as a '96 and maybe someone at the DMV made an input error, I could see it being a mis-registered '97. Hey, stranger things have happened!
Any chance you can post up a pic of your truck, and the offending wheels?

Good luck Rose. Sorry it's such a hassle to get something that otherwise should be so simple.
Oh, and welcome to Ford-Trucks forum too! Not a fun reason to be here, but hey, hopefully we can get it all figured out together.

'96 F-150 were all 5 lugs on 5.5" spacing, just like the rest of the OBS F-150's. If a person has a '96 F-150 with something different, it is not factory. The axle has been swapped, redrilled, or there are some goofy spacers/adapters in place.

I've seen several OBS F-150's on Craiglist incorrectly listed as 97'. I'm sure the reverse has happened too. To anyone in doubt, check your VIN to figure out the year.

If I were to guess, Rose had an issue with a 5x5.5 wheel on the F-150 because the center hole was too small or the backspacing was way off. "Didn't fit" leaves us guessing. Dodge 1500's of the same era as the Ford's under discussion shared the 5x5.5 part, but with small center holes and incompatible backspacing. I may very well be wrong on the "why", interested to hear the truth.

Mike, Wow, that looks really sharp with the Expedition rims. (Obviously the Lightning rims look great, too) Pretty much the look I was wanting to achieve! I just haven't seen many aftermarket rims that I like. I would prefer that my truck ends up looking like it could have been factory. Are those Expedition rims 17"s? Tires are 275s maybe? Did they fit the wheel opening ok? Do they self center on the center hole/hub, or do you need to be exact when modifying the bolt holes to keep the wheel concentric?
...or you can buy these...

Just a reminder, 1997 F150's were first built in late 1995 and available to purchase January 1, 1996. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_F...nth_generation) Some people just look at the production date, and not the VIN when requesting parts. I see it at my parts counter all the time!

My guess would be the model year on their title was taken from the build date, not the sell date. Prolly built before 01 Jan 1997.

As a side note, RoseG hasn't been back, either.
