04 F-450 V10 for service/welding truck?

Hello

havent been on here for along while, and was thinking of buying a V10 service/welding truck and was wanting to get some input from you guys.

Heres what Iam looking at 2004, Ford F-450, 4x4, 6spd, V10, 135k miles, utility bed with crane.

With my welder, air comp, torches, and tools there will be 2 ton on the truck other than whats already there (the crane, and bed weight).

Was wondering if you guys thought this would be a good engine and tranny for pullin the hills here in West by God Virginia?

Is 135K miles anything to be worried about on these engines?

Anyone have an idea of what MPG I would get with this setup?

Any input will be greatly apprecited.

Thanks James

BTW: was going to post a pic but couldn't figure out how.

I ran a 2000 CC F350 V10 4.30 gears Auto with a 8ft utility box. The truck scaled 9500 lbs 24/7 and even more depending on the job I was working on (Electric & Refrigeration), it also pulled a trencher trailer, utility trailer and enclosed trailer depending again what I was doing. It would average 9 to 11 mpg running E10 fuel. The truck had 99650 miles on it when I sold it to a sheet rock contractor and it was still running strong, last spring when we where back there he was running it, I have know idea how many miles are on it now.

I have considered a diesel but can't find one within 250 miles that has crane and a 7.3, and under about $22,000

Denny, that is what the dealer told me on the Mpg around 10 loaded down, I wanted to ask someone else who runs one everyday.

Thanks

James

His question pertains to the SPECIFIC vehicle in the post. Please don't start a "versus" thread.

I don't run one every day for work anymore I'm retired but if I had to run one again it would be the same truck . But I'm still running one (V10) for my RV adventures .

Never was my intention, i hate versus threads. Leads to unwanted arguments. But your rite, the comment could be taken wrong. Glad some one could offer an answer to him.

10 mpg? on the highway, yes. 6-7 in town is likely. That's what my 03 F450 gets.

The refinery I work at runs 3 Ford F350's with welders on them for pipeline work and 2 new Dodge 3500's with Hemi's. The welders I talked with like the older Ford v10's better. As far as mileage, 10 on the hiway sounds about right.

Thanks for the confirm on the gears.

With those gears and the 6spd the truck should handle the hills very well. Don't be afraid to rev the truck up over 4k rpm.
