pulled over for loud exhaust..how to get out of ticket...?
Anyone know a way to get out of a loud exhaust ticket without changing their exhaust? I got pulled over yesterday for that. It wasnt even half throttle either. I guess I better stay out of the city... I mean its pretty loud but its no louder than a harley that the cops never touch. The guy followed me for about 15 miles before he "noticed" me. I thought they couldnt follow you that long. Just venting... Any tips would be appreciated.

The only way I can think of would be to take off one of the exhaust bolts that holds the pipe to the header/manifold and loosen the other one...That would explain the loudnes, and the worst they would do (probably) is tell you to get it fixed. I know it's not the most honest way to go, but it would probably work.

do you have emission testing? if you have no cats and if its illegal, if you really want to get rid of the ticket weld some cats on to make it quieter and get the district attorney to listen to it. i got a sound ticket for my subwoofers and all i did was turn the amp down took it to the da and he cranked it full blast and my 2 15's sounded like 2 8's. he dropped the ticket and told me if i was ever there again he would push for the max fine.

if you have to take it to get inspected shove some steel wool into the exhuast tips. it will blow out in a couple of days or less if you hold it to the floor a couple of times. I run no mufflers or cats on mine and this has worked for me in the past.

Ha ha ha The old steel wool in the pipes trick. A friend of mine did that a few years ago and got out of the ticket. You will have to find some way to hold the steel wool in the pipes so it doesn't blow out. We shoved 3 pieces of steel wool onto the end of a coathanger then bent the end around to hold the wool in place. Next we stuffed the "mufflers" into the pipes, bent the wires over the ends of the pipes and hid the wires with a coulpe of those cheap clamp on ehxaust tips. It worked amazingly well and got him out of a ticket.

That's funny! Steel wool in the muffler trick. I learn something new from this board every time I log on! As for the comment on the Harleys, I've heard it before. The deal is that many Harleys come from the factory that loud, but our trucks don't. Good luck with the ticket.

I went to the courthouse and ended up paying 50 bucks for the ticket today. I asked him about pleading not guilty and he said I wouldnt have much of a chance if the exhaust was modified. I would have contested it if had the time... I'm going to be busy this weekend and I have to go back to school soon anyways but next time i will try that trick. Man that makes me mad...

Actually Harleys don't come from the factory any louder than other motorcycles. They have to meet Federal noise requirements. Most Harleys end up with gutted mufflers or are replaced with straight pipes.
I've heard the excuse loud pipes save lives, and as a motorcyclist I guess there is some validity to it but the plain truth its its misplaced machoism.

Just a side note here on loud bikes and trucks. I just bought a new 1100 cruiser bike and its real quiet. Guess what? Im gonna keep it that way---I cant undersand how harley riders make their bikes so loud--ever try riding a LOUD cruiser for long distances? HEADACHE CITY! As far as loud trucks, been there, done that. Now Im moving away from all of that and ironically, I want a low mellow classic rumble. Its a passing fany to have the loudest truck on the block. What will really wake up up to this fact, is when you notice that when others try and talk to ya, yr constantly doing "HUH"??? (progessive deafness LOL) Anymore, keep it simple:KEEP IT STOCK...and ENJOY

Unless you have a huge exhaust leak under your cab you shouldnt be able to hear the exhaust much at all. My truck is REALLY loud and I can easily hold a conversation in the truck with out yelling at the passenger. This is because all of the noise comes out in the back of the truck. The keep it stock and simple might be ok for you but doesnt work for me because I wouldnt have a hobby any more. Just my two cents.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Aug-02 AT 11:01 PM (EST)]Harleys have a piece of high temp fabric that you can easily remove from the stock muffler to get the classic sound - many (most) guys take it out. They are not very loud stock.
Think of it as "steel wool from the factory".
