The other day driving to the store and the trans went to slipping back into 2nd gear.checked fluid level and was ok.sat at the store for a few min. started back home and the trans done fine.changed in all 3 gears.drove it to work today and same thing when I was pulling onto the parking lot.it done fine on the drive home,no problems. No smoke or smell.I'm going to change the filter tomorrow. How much fluid do i need to put back in it and what type.It was my dad's truck since '74 and he passed away in '06 and I bought it off my mom.the truck sat for a couple years, just moving around the yard.Any suggestions on what could be up with this. Thanks guy's for the input.-Ken
look at the dipstick. it should tell you what fluid to use.
if it is the original trans from new and has never been worked on, i believe it should use type F.

I would agree with that. Make sure you drain the torque converter. Hard to be accurate on quantity but with both trans and TC drained probably around 12qts.
While you are under check the condition of the vacuum pipe and that the kickdown cable/rod is properly connected. Good luck.
