You need side to side play, some but not excessive. When the turbo is under lube oil pressure, the shaft centers on the bushings inside, and rides on a film of oil, which centers the shaft/wheel inside the housing. Even brand new turbos seem to have alot of play, when they are dry.

I remember thinking something was wrong when I first got the turbo as it had som play, but I can't recall how much there was as compared to now, I just dont know if I should change the turbo outside in a snowbank or try limp it home after my hitch....about 650kms, I dont like the leaking oil part of it a whole lot
ok I changed it out with my stocker for now (i havea 38r and up pipes from DI sitting in my room right now) aaand the bolts that hold the ex housing to the ressst of the turbo basically had backed out...only one was left hanging on bya few threads, one i found in the valley and the other two were long gone...dave said he would warrenty it no question so thats good! anyone need a turbo?

other than that this turbo was excellent. if I hadn't already bought a 38r in the meantime I would easily run it again.
I LOVE my 38R!!! Got it from this guy... Garrett 38r - 1999.5 - 03 7.3L PowerStroke - GAR-1127300 DO tell us whats goin on with the PDR unit though. My buddy toasted his too, and it was replaced with no questions.

When I opened the box on my new (rebuilt) replacement turbo I thought I'd gotten a bad one because the shaft had so much play in it. I went back to the Ford dealer and the parts guy had 3 more in stock and I wiggled the shafts on those and they were all as loose as mine. After it got oiled up it felt much tighter!
