When I posted up and asked for opinions on an F250 I was considering for purchase (a truck I subsequently bought last November), a few peeps told me to do the same thing to the gooseneck ball if I bought the truck.
I ended up buying the truck and pulled the ball out, coated the metal surfaces that contacted the pocket receptacle the ball sits in with a thin layer of white lithium grease, turned the ball over and stored it so the whole bed is flat and can be used accordingly.
I figure I'll only need to recoat it with a thin layer once a year because we don't get too much rain here.
