Hey guys, I just drove 3 hours away through a snowstorm to pick up my '01 F250 and it's great 88,000 miles on her and it's a dream to drive. Mechanic owned and orig. owner. Can't wait to put the horse trailer on it. Figured it was time to semi-retire the 92 7.3 N/A.
Just two little things
I searched the forum and it's perfectly fine that the truck sounds like a jet afterburner when you're standing beside the tailpipe right? I noticed it tonight when it was in the driveway after the high idle kicked in. -25C right now.
This is the first PSD I've ever started, and I'm so used to my 7.3 and after I cycle the glowplugs I only need to flick that ignition and it fires up. On the PSD it does turn over a bit before she fires.... Normal for these trucks?
Though I do think I need to get the glowplugs looked at. Iunno if it's the relay or the plugs themselves, but it sounds to me like the truck takes an extra second or two to fire up and it struggles just a tiny bit.
Right now it's -18C, 0F and I bet right now the WTS light would stay on for MAYBE 5 seconds and the truck's dead cold... That doesn't seem long enough to me and I heard on the forum somewhere that if the light doesn't stay on for say 10 sec. min, there could be some burnt out plugs?
I'm going to stay up til dawn and search the forum, but I'm expecting I'll have to do some resistance tests, etc to find out what's going on? Though right now I have no idea how to make my way around these PSD engine bays All these pipes and such lol.
Congrats and Welcome!!!! Yes when the high idle kicks on thats because your Exhaust Back Pressure Valve (EBPV) has closed to help the truck warm up. Sounds like she starts fine too. if your WTS light is on for only 5 sec. thats because that all your glow plugs needed to be ready. Truck should turn over a few times and fire off. Generally speaking when you have a glow plug issue you would get some white smoke when it fires.... Well good luck and have fun!
The light stays on for only a preset time, but the glow plugs themselfs stay on much longer a min. or two, even after the truck starts running. You can tell when they turn off if you have your lights turned on while the truck is running, your dash, dome, and headlights will get much brighter! Before you would start changing glow plugs, I would replace the GPR first! Mine tested ok but the contacts on the inside where burnt. Replaced the GPR, solved my problem! Also you can ohm each glow plug to tell if they are bad, with out taking the VC's off. Im looking for the link on how to do this, I can't remmember what they should read! Hope someone else can.....
A. I like to know exactly how many miles are on the oil in my vehicles
B. It will make starting in the cold SO much easier!
It may already have one of those oils in it already, but, me personally, unless I watched the PO (previous owner) do the change myself, I never take their word on it. That's just me.
II. The WTS light is BS. Your glowplugs can stay on for up to 120 seconds after turning on the ignition. Super cheap mod that's easy & quick is the GPR LED Mod. Do it and you'll know exactly how long your GPs are running.
III. Here's a good write-up on Testing your GPs; I'm sure with your 92 7.3 (my first was an 88 7.3) you're familiar with the general stuff, but there's details about your new toys setup there.
IV. Please update your profile & add a signature so we know more about you & your new rig! It'll help us get to know you a bit better, and can save time in troubleshooting too!
Congrats on the new rig! Now get us some pics, dagnabbit!!! LOL
Sweeeeeeeetttttttt I love gettin new people in here and sounds like you got a beauty. I think they have you on the right track with the GP's and what Brendan said on the oil. As for the truck... cherish this thing, sounds like you gotta very nice truck.
Papadelogan, he changed the oil a few days ago and put what was left of the 20L pail in the back. Motorcraft filter too. He said he's always put CAT 0W30 Syn. in her and it makes a huge diff. Expensive **** too
Here's a pic to wet your lips... It's a little shrunk, but it's supposed to be a longbox lol.
I've never heard of CAT 0W30 synthetic but then, I don't own, work on, and deal with CAT engines at all! I wonder how expensive it is compared to the Schaeffer's/Rotella.... hmmm
