For bigger truck engines, while the scream of a Jimmy diesel is hard not to like, I kind of have a soft spot for the big 4 stroke V8's, E9 Mack, 3408 and the likes...
Part of my hearing damage comes from riding shotgun in a 318 Jimmy powered 78 Western Star for quite a few miles when I was younger, some from being around 3 and 4-53 powered logging equipment too...

As for a pickup, well, having owned a 7.3 PSD, my 6.9 in turboed and non turbo trim, spent lots of time around 6.0's and D-Maxes's, and my current DD being a straight piped Cummins, honestly, the nicest sounding exhaust of the lot was my 6.9 with the turbo on it. Sure, the Cummins has the big rig sound, but, it's not really all that exciting of a sound. Going down the road, the Cummins is more pleasant on the ears, it's actually MUCH quieter in cab, lots less injection noise coming from under the hood(my 6.9 truck has a gasser cab, and quite a large amount of timing....)
Just give this a listen: Remix for 82f100swb - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

In the power department, well, I was never able to directly compare them, but, the Cummins definatley has more down low than the Ford ever did, but, the turbo I had on the Ford didn't really do much until 2100 or so, which is right about where the Cummins is getting ready to call it quits.
I really would like to see the 33 psi the Cummins is making on a 6.9... That would be interesting for sure. No questions the 6.9 would walk away on top end, the Cummins just doesn't go that fast, 81 mph is all she wrote... Likely gets there quicker though.
Why I say my 6.9 was unpleasant to drive:

Of course it was... Mufflers have no place on a turbo charged engine...
I have no issues with how it sounds, more of how loud it is in the cab, the noise coming from under hood was easily the loudest part of the truck

I have heard them for many years and some sound better then others if different trucks.

Nowadays, My favorite is any of them leaving the shop plus mine when I am driving away, especially headed to the river.
