My wife has an 02 Mountaineer. She had ran it quiet low on brake fluid and the red brake light came on. A few days later the ABS light came on and stayed on after starting and would go off once you put it into gear and would stay off until you got up to about 15 mph. I changed both sets of pads, bled the system and changed the rear speed sensor. Still doing the same thing. Does anyone have and idea of what to check now? Thanks for the help.
According to my '04 Explorer manual: At around 12mph, the hydraulic pump motor turns on for about a half-second; any ABS malfunction disables the system and turns on the dash light.
See if the ABS is throwing any codes, before you replace more parts (there's also a front wheel speed sensor).
R/H Front. The Manual says to disconnect the battery, then remove the tire/wheel and rotor. The harness unplugs at the top of the wheel well (I can't tell from the picture if you do this from the wheel well or the engine bay). The sensor bolts to the front of the hub inboard of the axle flange (torque is 13 ft-lb).
Because the system was so low on fluid, I'm wondering if the proportioning valve is now cocked and is causing the light.........just a thought.
I thought the proportioning valve was a separate part (like in the good ol' days), but it appears to be built into the HCU (hydraulic control unit) of the ABS. The manual highlights 4 causes of the ABS light staying on above 12mph: Circuitry, Instrument Cluster, Brake Fluid Level Sensor, and ABS Module. There are a zillion tests to run using a diagnostics scanner and multimeter; you might be $$$ ahead by having the dealer diagnose the system (get a price up front and make sure his people are equipped and qualified to do this). Good luck..........
I got ahold of an ABS scanner today and it says it's the left front wheel sensor so I'm going to replace it when the part comes in so hope fully that does the trick. Thanks again for all your help.
Hmmmm..........the manual says it's located on the R/H front but the picture looks an awful lot like the left. If so, the sensor would be bolted to the rear of the hub. Let me know if the manual's wrong, in case I ever need to change it out.
BTW, where is Smithfield? I'm originally from York, many moons ago!
There are wheel speed sensors on both front wheels and one in the rear differential to watch for rear wheel slips. They send info to the 4X4 module as well as the ABS module. Some of the newer SUVs that have that anti-rollover stuff have wheel speed sensors on both rear wheels too.
Yeah, I thought about the front having 2 last night after reviewing the manual again; hopefully Otter gets 'er fixed and the sensor isn't too many $$$.

Steve
And I see he's got a Mounty which will have AWD, not an Explorer, so no 4X4 module.
