Buying a new SD 5.4L V8 or 6.8L V10?

I'm planning on buying a new superduty in the next month or so and I want to know the pro's and con's of the 6.8L and the 5.4L?

Any Input?

It's early and I can't tell if they are bitin yet, but if they do this is going to be a LONG thread... As for the question, very close mileage and a bunch more power for $600. Seems like a no brainer. Do a search on this and you will find a million posts about it.

You will get a ton of input on this one. I know a number of people who drive the v10 work trucks. When towing they get almost as good mileage as the v8 and I suspect better mileage in some circumstances, but when not towing or hauling the mileage is a much wider gap between the v10 and v8. Also, it depends on the driver. For instance, I have a heavy foot and I dont get great mileage in my v8 and get much worse mileage in the the v10 on the occasions that I have driven it.

In my opinion, if you plan on towing a lot or you want to lift the truck and put substantially larger tires on it, I would suggest going with the v10, otherwise the v8 is just fine.

It basically boils down to your preferences and what you want the truck to do. I own a 5.4L, tow a 28 foot enclosed car hauler with 4500 pounds of car in it (around 8000 pounds total load). I love my 5.4L.

Others think the 5.4L doesn't have enough power and will tell you to get a V-10.

All I can recommend id that if you anticipate towing over 8000 pounds on a regular basis, you should probably get the V-10, but in either case test drive a V-8 and a V-10 Super Duty abd decide for yourself.

V-8 (3 valve with 3.73 gears and 5R110W automatic transmission)
The mileage figures vary, depending on weather and stuff.
Hiway driving, 15-18 MPG, normally 16.5 to 17.
City, 12 or so.
Towing 3500 on the hiway, 12-13
Towing 8000 on the hiway, 10-11

I have the 5.4 and wish I had the extra 50hp. Not so much for towing, just because I like more power and there are more toys available for the SuperDuty v10 than the V8 (ie Whipple supercharger.)

No superchargers for the 3V V10 that I know of. There are a few for the 3V 5.4L.

If you're looking for a 08+ gas Super Duty then I won't even get into the MPG because it doesn't matter. Any mention of it is silly, IMO.

Bottom line, and I posted to your same thread in the V10 forum, or a mere $600 you get 62 more horsepower and 92lb.ft. of torque.

Hardest part may be finding a V10.

True Dat! Earlier this year I was going to buy a F350 SD and I could not find a V10 to save my life. Everything sitting on dealer’s lots were diesels. I was able to find 2 V10, but they were stripped down work trucks, and i mean stripped down.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

I had my dealer do a dealer search and they could not find a F350 Lariat Crew Cab with a V10 anywhere on the whole east coast. I was told that I would have to order one if I wanted one. I've since decided to keep my Ex for a couple more years, hopefully they will still be offering the V10 when I'm ready. Since I've stopped looking I did run into one 08 F350 with a V10 from TX, but it was 2wd.<o></o>

Good luck,<o></o>

Bah Hum Bug! Go to Autotrader.com and search for 2008-2009 F250 with V10 and 4x4... they are all over the place!

This was a 300 mile radius of Charlotte, NC:

They weren't all over the place this time last year. I wasn't looking for used ones at the time and I did say that as soon as I stopped looking I found some. I guess when diesel started to crest the $5.00 mark then dealers started ordering a few V10's to have on hand.

Responded in the V-10 forum. Don't believe you should ask the same question in three different sections at the same time.

Mike, please do not be offended... I wasn't directing my remarks toward you or anyone else in this thread. I was only trying to let the thread originator know that the V10 engine could be seriously considered because V10 trucks are currently in stock at many dealerships.

I've never figured out why some dealers or those within a region stock truck configurations different from others. The only '08 F250s that I could find in San Diego configured the way I wanted were either diesels or V10s. The overwhelming majority were SuperCrew diesels. Even stranger was a complete lack of '09s in Southern California while there were an abundance of them in Phoenix, AZ.
