dchamberlain, on that 6.0L, if the truck is set up like you describe, the rewiring that would be necessary would be to splice the alternator wire into the CJB wire before it gets to the battery, then connect the ammeter between the battery and the splice.
nothing fancy, and technically you won't be changing anything, if, in fact, you can measure ~0 ohms between the two connections.
