Doin' hubs tonight...have question....
I have the passengers side hub assembly in,OK,my question is should there still be some up and down play in the axle shaft?Sorry, let me be more clear...play at the inside of the wheel area at the axle u-joint, I checked the drivers side(havent done that side yet) and the play is there too.

Well, my hubs(bearings) were deffinately bad, Ive only replaced the passenger side so far but there was a lip at the bearings at the very inside were they meet(what would normally be the race I guess),but you can reach and raise the u-joint up and down and I was wondering if that ws normal.

There was nothing wrong with mine and it had play.
So they must have some play in them./

There will be a small amount of axle stub shaft movement with the autolock (or manual) hub uninstalled. There are bearings in the hublocks that keep the axle centered in the needle bearing and axle seal. This is the reason one should never drive the truck with the hublocks removed.
The only axle bearing in the differential housing is located close to the pumpkin. There is a dust seal on the outer side of the housing (that normally works itself loose shortly after installation).
