8ply vs 10 ply tires

Buying a E-350 Ford van 6.8L 4:11 rear and having it 4x4'd. Stock tires are LT245/75R/16E ( 10 ply)...Want to install LT 295/75R/16D 8 ply) BFG all-terrain TA KO. Sidewalls concern me since the off road travel could cause a problem for them. Tires should change rear to a 3:75 if my math is correct. Any thoughts on the reduction in ply or my math ?? I guess I would then need a chip change for the shift pattern, fuel and other changes.

I don't think you will have any problems with the BFG AT's they are a purpose built off-road/hi-way tire. If you want even stronger side walls you will have to go with a Bias-ply tire.
