newbie exhaust question....

The one thats stock on the truck is a 3.5 I believe. The 4 and 5" systems cause some debate. Some say the 5" relieves too much backpressure and all this and that...I went with a 4" because its a safe alternative that fell in between! Five just seems too much for what I wanted.
Im sure you get a heck of a lot more exhaust flowing thru the 5" but 4" works for a lot of people...including me...

It is indeed a 3.5", but it's also not a mandrel bent system, so it's narrower at every bend. Also, the muffler is really restrictive! A cheap way to get rid of a lot of backpressure is to ditch the muffler and put in a straight pipe. That said, a full turbo-back 4" mandrel bent system will flow plenty!! I'm not really convinced on the whole back pressure thing. The turbo is where the back-pressure to the engine comes from. I found out exactly how much when I put in the van turbo with a larger exhaust housing. Backpressure and EGTs are way down. Go with either, and let your wallet be your guide -- both are better than stock. Biggest difference is sound, and I happen to really like how mine sounds.

Basically the 5in is recommended for 400+ hp and the 4in for anything less. The reason being is the 5in cools the exhaust gases to fast making it harder for the engine to push it out, so it isnt as free flowing as your would think. They say you lose some power on the bottom end with the 5in compared to the 4in.

With a turbo you already have enough restriction and you want it to flow as best as possible. Of course there are limits to it, the biggest being your to bear with the noise. If it weren't for that we'd all be running a short pipe out the turbo just to clear the firewall. I'd go with a 4" system as I did it's not to loud and it definately helps the truck.
