I'm sure this topic has been covered several times, but I tried to do a search and the search engine does not seem to be working, Anyway Can someone tell me how difficult it is to reapir the shifter in a 1999 F-350 Automatic.
I seem to recall this problem in fords many years ago and was surprised that when my son purchased his truck the other day, it too had this same problem.
The shifter is sloppy and seems to not lock into the different gears as well as it should.
If that doesn't help.
The aluminum shift tube and plastic bushings will need replacing.
This takes about an hour and are available from the dealer.
You pop off the shroud from the column (un-screw then pull apart)
It is easily accessable with a few hand tools once you see whats there.
For me, it was none of the above. In my case it was a plastic plate on the left side of the transmission where the linkage connected. Simple enough to fix once it was identified.
With the above suggestions you should now be able to trace the problem no matter where it is from the steering column to the transmission. Let us know how you make out.
Thanks I will look at this also. I did find that the upper bushing had slipped down. I re-positioned it, but I plan to order a new set. I'll also take a look at this plate.

i did both of these routes but still had a sloppy shift that i was about to give up on. though either of these could rememdy your issue, on mine i followed on the end of the shifter "under the column" i followed the thin metal "wire""cable" thats on a hook to a bracket that had two tourqe bolts that were loose. you can't see the screws from looking up-its up and look back towards the drivers seat.
mine were extremely loose and i was so happy to find this problem cause it tighten everything up like new.
mine was getting so bad i had no low1.
good luck
