My '03 250 s/c with a 5.4 has been averaging about 230miles per tank. Thats about 9.6mpg not towing anything, driving like a grandpa. My buddy with the same exact truck is averaging around 12-13mpgs. His is completely stock. I recently purchased mine and it has headers, K&N intake and exhaust. Im not sure if its chiped out or anything.
Where should I start?
The truck has 112,000 on the ticker. Should I replace the plugs, injectors, fuel filter? any ideas?
Plugs and a fuel filter are always good things to replace when buying a used vehicle! You might also want to clean the MAF just incase someone over-oiled the K&N when they cleaned it.
I agree. I always change out the Fuel Filter, o2 sensors, Oil, and most other fluids. Since you have over 100k, I would definitely do the plugs. Spark Plugs maybe rated for 100k miles, but reality is that 75k miles is pushing it. o2 sensors are supposed to be changed around 60k miles, so they are due even if they aren't the originals.

Thanks in advance!
That sounds about right to me. I got 8.3 the other day, but that could be because I was letting it warm up in the mornings. What year is your friends truck? If it has a 3V 5.4 they usually get better mileage than the 2V.
The other guys have it. Clean MAF, replace plugs and COP boots, replace fuel filter and replacing the O2s would be a good idea. Once the plugs get past 50k miles they start going south and are more prone to a misfire. You could have the fuel injectors cleaned at a dealer or just run a tank of fuel injector cleaner. I usually run a tank with fuel injector cleaner every year.
Not calculating gas mileage during the winter works also.

Get used to it. I have an '05 [see sig] and get about the same mileage. I was happy to see that after running a full tank in 4WD, the mileage barely dropped though. I'm not sure if this is good or bad.
Comments?
my 01 f250sd 4x4 5.4 averages around 10-12 depending on if I tow. Its stock and I just did the plugs about 6 months ago. I am getting between 390-420 miles per tank. I have a 38 gallon tank though from what I understand some of the sd had smaller tanks.
I have a 2002 f250sd 7.3L Powerstroke. Im only getting about 240miles to the tank. about 9.5ave miles/gal. is there anything special i can do to make that alittle better. I know its a big engine but any tricks to make that mileage any better would be awesome.

I hope your not running the tank empty,,, your math aint adding up for me.
I also have a 03 F250 SD 4X4 5.4L with 3.73 rear. Around town I avereage 12 to 12.5; on the highway the best I have ever done is 14.6. If I put the camper on the truck, the mileage drops to around 9.6 on the highway. The truck is all stock.
I tell you this to use for comparison. It was said earlier, it appears you need to do some maintenance (i.e. plugs, filters, etc.).
I have an 01' F-250 with the V-10. I have 271,000 on it and all stock but the e-Bay y-pipe. I also am running BFG Rugged Trail A/Ts(Stock Size).
I usually average 12 right now in the winter and in the summer about 13-14.
Your plugs, fuel filter, O2 sensors, injectors, MAF, throttle body, and cylinders may need to be cleaned or replaced respectively. I would run a can of Seafoam in the tank and in the crankcase. Not to mention your trans may need to be flushed which would reduce friction depending on the state of your oil. Also while you're at it, I'd change differential fluids and transfer case.
