98' 5.4 XLT ABS Light On

My ABS light came on about 2 weeks after I did rear brakes. I tried changing the Sensor on top of the differential and left the battery unhooked for a couple hours and light is still on. I put the original sensor back in? Any other suggestions to try? Are there any sensors on the calipers for the ABS.

When you first turn the key on, the ABS light will flash out a series of blinks and pauses. This is the trouble code and would go a long way in answering your question if you post the code here.

No flashes at all. Light does not come on till I drive for a couple minutes then goes off once I turn key off. I had the cruise control recall done last week and I know that connects to the master cylinder, could this have caused anything?

The cruise control fix was just an in-line fuse and the rear calipers don't have sensors. I had this same problem and the new sensor fixed it. Where did you get your new sensor from? Is it OEM?

If you have a meter I would check across the terminals in on the new sensor for continuity. That might tell you if the new one was any good.

The new one was from Auto Zone? I returned it today and just put the original one back in.

OK, I went to the dealer and picked up another speed sensor there since the one at auto zone didn't fix the ABS Light either. I left the battery disconnected and had no light for the whole day. Yesterday I was driving the truck and the ABS light is back on again. What else is in the ABS system that I can check? Are there any sensors on each wheel? Like I mentioned above I did back brakes a few weeks back before this ABS light ever came on?

It might not have anything to do with the rear brake job. However, there are sensors on each of the front hubs, one of those might be bad or disconnected or dirty or corroded. When I replaced lower ball joints on my Expy, I had to disconnect the sensors to remove and overhaul the hubs; I found the sensors and mounting hole and mounting bolt to be caked with grease and rust; ended up removing and cleaning those. You should be able to get behind the hub without having to remove the hub, but you will need to remove the front tires to see the sensors. Give that a try, maybe just clean them up and see if it improves, if not, consider troubleshooting the front sensors and connector for a short or ground.

Here's the procedure to remove and replace the front hub sensors:

Sensor, Front

Removal

Disconnect the front brake anti-lock sensor electrical connector.
Remove the front disc brake rotor shield.

Remove the (A) front brake anti-lock sensor bolts and the (B) front brake anti-lock sensor.
Installation

To install, reverse the removal procedure.
