I say pull the motor if you have a hoist and an engine stand and use the opportunity to change the oil pan if it's rust, rear seal, oil pump, and rod bearings or any thing else you think is necessary.

I never pulled the the trans but it sure looks heavy so I would imagine that you would want a trans jack to do the job

I've done it both ways, with the engine out and by pulling the tranny although on a 2WD. I'd say either way. With the engine out at least you can do most of the work standing up, unless you have access to a lift. Good luck.

I would drop the transmission. You would definitely need a transmission jack, you could probably rent one. A good selection of both metric and fractional hand tools will make the job go quicker and easier. I would definitely recommend a Haynes repair manual, it gives some time saving tips and tricks.

i would pull the motor, a little less removing work but trans removal just sucks cause you cant get a lift under a truck . unless you dont have a lift, then drop the trans, when ive done it i make up a wooden bracket thingy to set on a regular floor jack. nik

I've done it on a floor jack.
But it would be better(safer) to rent one of these

There was room to set the whole tranny/ transfer case back on the crossmember once I pulled the transmission mount and floor plate.

Yanking the motor is a big pain that I would avoid if I could.

Just my 2c
