Fan Clutch Nut

I'm gettin ready to do the water pump on my truck. I bought the Ford fan cluth tool at Advance, it is supposed to fit ALL Ford's, and it is too small. Does anyone know what size the nut is or another way to get it off?

It's 1 7/8", I cut one out of a piece of flat stock. If that's not an option and you have an air chisel you can use a blunt chisel on the flats of the nut and rattle it loose.

Whatever you do be careful when it finally comes off the end of the pump, the clutch assembly is heavy and tries to eat a hole in the radiator.

Not sure if you're aware of it or not but the shroud and the clutch/fan both have to be removed at the same time. Each piece is in the way of the other so they gotta come out together.

I had the same problem. Bought the wrong set so went and rented a set at a tool supply house for $15 a day. You only need it to break it loose, after that you can spin it off.

Thank you, I returned the original and they told me they had a rental set that would fit, got that and it was a breeze. Also, thanks bluemule, they came right out together.

One more thing:

When you put the fan clutch back on make sure you use the wrench and pulley holder and get it tight. If you don't when you shut the engine off the weight of rotating fan and clutch will spin the clutch right back off of the pump and get another shot at eating the radiator.

Nope, right hand threads.
