Getting caught out in the snow 12-06-08

Anyone do any slipping and sliding in the snow this past weekend (12-06-08). I got caught out in Point Pleasant in my Excursion. I came up on an Explorer on its side in a superelevated curve. I was not going very fast but the front wheels kept locking up and sliding me toward the guardrail on the lower point of the curve. I was #3 in traffic, but when I could not stop I became even with #1 who had slid to the guardrails but somehow never hit them. We waited about 45 minutes for it to clear. The road was so slick that the wrecker using his winch to flip the Explorer over kept winching himself closer to it. They finally managed to get the Explorer flipped and then drove it on the rollback. After the excitement me and my wife decided to go to Benegins to eat and hope the roads got better, well they did not. All the roads home out of Point Pleasant were closed due to accidents. We ended up taking route 7 in Ohio to route 33 back to Ravenswood, then home. I talked to another friend that was in an accident in the same area after we came through and when they called 911 they were #41 on the dispatch list. It was a busy day for the first responders. He ended up with $1800.00 damage to his Ford truck.

ESOF gave me fits on my Excursion also. It would not engage in 4wd, the hubs were stuck and I could not turn them to "lock". Later, I used WD40, a rubber mallet, and a large pipe wrench and finally turned the hubs to "lock". I guess I need to take the hubs apart to clean and lube them. The Excursion is a tank in the snow when the ESOF 4x4 works.

I spent all morning plowing here in Clarksburg.
We had a layer of ice under the snow.
Everything was slicker after it was plowed.

If it snows, I am out there somewhere.

Back in 03 the Presidents Day storm had me in my truck at the mall for 3 days.
2 weeks later, I was still plowing.

Someone kept pushing a Porta Potty behind me evey time I backed up by the end of the second day.

Paul we're glad to hear your toy didn't get hurt.

Down here, we stayed buttoned up listening to all the accidents being dispatched by the 911 guys. When I have gone out, my ESOF on the 250 has worked like a champ to get me up my driveway...then once I'm 'out' I can just switch it off with no problem.

I LOVE that ESOF!

I heard there was a bunch of accidents up that way Dave.

For me, I managed to stay home all day Saturday and just watch it snow. That was a very fine snow... almost just looked like fog out there except it was collecting on the ground

We have a bunch of accidents when it rains.

When we have ice or snow, LOOK OUT they are coming at you from all directions.

I am expecting about the same tonight.

Got caught out in the snow on 12/12/08! We made a run over to Elkins this evening to get some groceries. It didn't snow here hardly at all today so it seemed like a good idea at 4:30 About half way up Cheat the roads got real nasty. They probably got an additional 4 inches in Elkins while I was there. Good times. Had to use the ESOF on the way home across Cheat. There was a car on its top in Mill Creek. Good to be home.

After today though I'm convinced that my Michelins are about 20 times better in the snow/ice than the Pirelli's it came with....

Anybody else get any snow today?

I was out last night, the bridges were glare ice very early.
Saw several accidents on almost every bridge.

When I found a bridge with no accident on it, I tapped my brakes.

Instant slide, zero traction.

Glad I picked a short bridge to experiment on.

12-12-08 I decided to travel from Ripley to Ravenswood on I-77 (about 8 miles) around 5:00p.m.. It had just started to snow in Ripley and the roads were in good shape. As I got closer to Ravenswood the roads slowly became white. I was driving my 97 Deville so I was a little concerned but the FWD handles real well in the snow. When I left Ravenswood to head down Route 2 toward Cottageville the roads were real bad, almost totally snow covered. When I got to the Jackson County Industrial Park it was like someone drew a line on the road and they went from all white to clear but wet. No problems the rest of the way home. I do not know about you all, but I watch my outside temperature gauge alot when I am driving in bad conditions, especially to see if the temp drops fast below freezing.

I love snow as long as it stays off the roads!!!!

Jeez....I didn't have that problem....I spent last week in San Diego. It was 17 when I left Hinton Monday morning....it was 61 when I got off the plane Monday afternoon!

Oh yeah....it never dropped below 52 degrees the whole time I was there!

Of course when I got back to Charleston Friday afternoon (the truck wasn't plugged in because it was at the Yeager Airport all week) the truck started with a buck and a snort because of the cold.

LOL

Well between all the rain and blue cold weather, I would settle for a foot or so so I can make some money.
