Identifying stock tire size & suggestions (again!)

I didn't buy it new, and I have been unable to find it in print.
Can anyone tell me what size wheels and tires came on a 1973 F-250 3/4 ton 2WD?
It currently has 9.25 X 16.5 tires on it.
The spare is an 8.75 X 16.5.
I would like to go with a more standard size such as 16 or 17.
Will they fit on these rims or do I have to replace them?
If I have to replace them, what size works best?
I stay on the highway and tow my boat mostly.
Suggestions........

Don

Are you sure that they are not 9.5R16.5? These are equivalent to 245/75R16 I believe.

NEVER put a 16.5 inch anything with a 16 inch anything.
Go with 16 inch wheels. They are the most common.

The best source of information about tire size vs requisite wheel size is the individual web-sites of the tire manufacturers----i.e. , goodyear , BF goodrich , etc..-----as you review the info the recommended wheel ranges will show a wheel size(width) of 9"----Nobody make a 9" width wheel----nor does anybody make a 7.5" width wheel----wheels only come in 7" , 8" , 10" , 12" , etc , hope this helps , fd :-X11

You can still get quite a few 16.5 inch tires and wheels. I think that if you have an 8 lug wheel, and want 44's, you have to go to 16.5.

The stock wheels on my truck that came with 9.5R16.5's were 16.5x6.75.
