fuel mileage questions
well i have an 02 f-150 now, but im looking at an 07 f-150 extended cab FX4 5.4 with 20" wheels and 3.55 gears, its got 10k on it. Im also looking at an 07 1500 hemi ram quad cab with 20" wheels and 3.92 gears. Now i know everyone on here is going to say go with ford....i expect that being on a ford site lol. But i drove both and like both. Now i figure that the 5.4 will get better mileage than the 5.7, but im wondering what you guys are getting with yours. I wont be keeping it stock, ill be adding an intake, exhaust and programmer. Any help is appreciated

I thought all FX4s had 3.73 gears. My 07 FX4 averages 17.5mpg in normal summer driving. Lately I've been using 4WD often and driving through heavy slush and snow. The mpg has been about 15 in these conditions. My best mileage was on a 800 mile trip driving 70mph most of the time yeilding 19mpg. I't an extended cab with the stock 18" BFG tires.

I can give you both sides of the fence here. I've got a 5.4 and the 5.7 in the driveway right now
06 (bone stock) 14+MPG city, got 21 MPG on the long haul road trips. avg of 19 mpg highway
you just need to drive the speed limit and be smart about it
05 Durango with 5.7 (325 HP version)...it has the 3.55 gears.
12-12.5 mpg city
17 highway, about 20 mpg if I really baby the hell out of it.
that 07 had the MDS system. I have yet to find anybody who likes that. Sounds nice on paper, but real life has people complaining about the lurch and downshift hesitations when it goes from 4-banger to 8 cyclinder. Apparently it isn't so "seamless"

On colder mornings, say below the freezing mark I generally hit the remote starter, and let it run maybe 3 or 4 minutes.
I have mine intentionally set to shut off after 12 minutes if I do not put the key in the ignition.
Sometimes I just get busy on the phone with a customer, or something with the wife, or kids, and do not want it idling in the driveway for long periods.
I like it to just be warmed a few minutes so the motor is not ice cold is all.
Then I drive it easy for say the first 5 minutes before stepping hard on the throttle.
