I tried to help the guy out, he was getting torn apart by some guys questioning what he had, and he was getting some real knuckleheads who had no clue what they were talking about...anyways, it was a 250, that had a D44 in it, but it does have a HPD60 up front now. So no, it wasn't a true 350. On top of that, some of the things don't match up for the trim level he stated, as he said it was all original. But you know how it goes with 30+ yo trucks...tons of stuff could be swapped. And to add to the whole vin thing...if it's a supercab, the first digit will be an X...and not a F.
How do you know the truck was a dana 44 at first? I asked the black/silver F250 In Wisconson on ebay to send me pics of the VIN tags. He seems pretty honest I just don't think he knows much about the truck. He sent me the door sticker, but not the VIN plate b/c it is missing from the truck he's going to try to locate it tomorrow. We'll see. It is a 07-79 build F250, and has 7400Lb GVWR. 3650LB Front and 4610LB rear. Since I didn't get the VIN plate I can't tell much more. He did say the truck is missing the front fuel tank and it was originally Blue under the cab lights.

Another thing I think is off for the year is the 100mph speedo? Anybody else have that on their 79? My 79 300ci only goes to 85mph. My dads 2wd 79 went to 85 also as I had it wrap around once back to about 8mph. Also the bedsides don't have the stakeside holes/tie down holes. Were they an option or are the bedsides redone? The truck definately is clean but a new paint job can hide a lot of sins. I was really interested in the truck until it didn't have the VIN plate.

What else did you pick out about the trim levels not matching up? I'm really only very familiar with the CUSTOM trim package.

Did the really HD 79's have helper springs in the rear or not? There are four different GVWR on the 78 F250 4x4's from 6700, 7300, 8100, 8400.

On a different note, would anybody be interested in a .pdf of how to decode up to a 1978 F and E series VIN plate? I have info from a 1978 Shop manual with all the codes breakdown. I have been thinking of scanning it b/c I've never seen one online. It's about 20 pages worth of codes and stuff.

Thanks,

Brian

FTE has VIN decoders, and I've personally decoded over 600 VIN's and Warranty Plates on FTE in two years, and can decode everything from 1948 thru 2003.

Even if you have the Warranty Plate, the front axle ID code usually is not listed.

This was true in 1959 and still true today.

Only a very few front axles codes were listed on the Warranty Plate 1973/79, it's the 3rd digit of the AXLE Code.

Usually the 3rd digit is just a letter denoting P/S or Tilt Wheel.

The 3 digit BODY code denotes the interior trim and tells if the truck has a: Custom, Ranger, Ranger XLT or Lariat interior.

btw: The VIN plate is located at the corner of the dash, drivers side, while the Warranty Plate is located on the left door face below the latch.

Thanks, my terminology was incorrect. I meant the warranty plate. I tried to use the FTE VIN decoder and it came back not knowing what the vehicle was. What did I do wrong? I'm basing my research off of the 78 shop manual I have. When I went to look at mine, you're right, the front axle code isn't listed for the D44.

What can you tell me about VIN
F26HCFE5707

that I can't find in the shop manual?

Your help appreciated.

F26 = F250 4WD Pickup

H = 351M 2V

C = Ontario Canada Assembly Plant

FE5707 = 1979

I know FTE has VIN decoders, but I've never used them, except twice to correct errors in FTE's VIN decoders!

From what I've read here, the FTE VIN decoders are missing some info, and have errors when the info is listed.

One of these days, I'm going to get with IB Adrian and correct the info.

We recently discussed scanning & posting 100's of parts catalog illustrations as sticky's.

IB Adrian is local, and a member of the SoCal Chapter, as I am.

btw: I decode from the parts catalogs.
--------------------------------------
Dana 44: The FORD front axle ID tag is located under one of the bolts that holds the inspection cover on.

Do not be surprised if it's missing.
--------------------------------
Dana 60's also have the FORD ID tag in this location, do not be surprised if it's missing.

Dana 60: The DANA front axle ID tag is on a metal plate (2" x 1/2") that is bolted (2 bolts) to the housing to the RIGHT of the inspection cover.

The Dana ID code will be seven or possible 8 digits long, like these examples: 603010-1 or 603010-11.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Dana 60 & 70 rear axles also have the ID tag in this location, except it's to the LEFT side of the inspection cover.

Whatever these codes are, post them, I can decode them.

And of course there is no VIN decoder that would decode something that starts with F13.

F28.(IRC) [edit] It appears that this was answered several times in this thread...

My yellow 4X crew was a cab and chassis, that was the VIN. IRC, wern't the crew cabs hand built? (cab and rear doors?) Maybe thats why they did not get a special vin designation?(or another reason why they should have had one?

Uh...We've been down that road before!

Not to mention the so-called MODEL Code of F130, the mystery that was never cleared up.

Doncha hate it when someone comes here, asks a question like "What is a F13 or F130," then never posts again?

I asked someone we both know not all that long ago if he ever found out what a F13 or F130 was. Nope.

Just wanted to mention that while VIN decoders can be fun to see what the original truck would have had as original equipment, many changes occur over the years. I have seen several F250 snowfighters and F350 4x4's that have had the front axle removed and a D44 installed.
The demand for D60F's is such that guys will find a complete truck, buy it, swap out the front axle and sell it again.
Vin will indicate that the truck has the holy grail of front axles, and a buyer might not bother to even recognize the fact that it has been swapped out.
Just something to think about.

Wrong year Bill, that didn't start till 80 I'm guessing. 79 and prior the VIN plate is on the driver side door. They also handed out a warranty card with the owners manual back in 79. I still have mine from my truck I bought new back then.

This is true, I have the original "warranty card" with mine as well. Has a little metal pin stamped strip on a paper card.

Anybody know about the 100mph speedo and what years they came in the Fseries?

I like this truck but it looks like it was just put together as a really nice project truck. Unless I can confirm it is original equipment as it sits, I think I'm going to pass on it. It is a nice truck from the pictures, but I think I'll be patient and look for a nice California truck with NO rust instead.

BTW, I envy you CA guys. There is no more perfect environment for a car than the State of CA. I bought an 1983 533i two years ago in Napa Valley and after 25 years there is not a spot or speckle of rust anywhere on this car. Wish we could keep-em like that here in Cleveland...

Here is the pic, but it doesn't seem to want to work? Why can't you attach pictures on this website? Why does it as for a URL when trying to attach a pic?

Here is another f350 that is on ebay 320321677011 right now if anyone is interested. Looks like it could be a nice project truck if it's a real f350

Yep, that road has been traveled and it's too bad it's a never ending one. I found a pile of old doors in a junkyard at one time and actually found a VIN plate with the F13........ on it, so I took it just to have proof something like that does exist. Too bad there was no truck attached to it. Anyway, off topic, sorry about that.

The Warranty Plate is on the left door face below the latch since at least 1963.

A VIN Plate isn't a Warranty Plate.
