trans pan question, shalow or deep

I went to get a trans filter and pan gasket and the guy asked me if my 4R100 was a shallow or deep pan. How do you identify the two?

"They" say the shallow one is on the 2WD, and the deep one is on the 4WD. But mine has the deep pan...

BTW, the deep pan has about an inch and a half or two inches below the bolt holes...

I didn't know that Joe. I thought they were all the same.

I have the MAG HTYEC deep pan
it holds about 8 extra qaurts of ATF
I have heard differing view points on a stock vs deep tranny pan
as far as extra cooling and other attributes. Some say they are a positive modification/upgrade vs some saying stock capacity is fine.
The def improvement is most aftermarket pans have incorporated cooling fins built into them and a magnetic drain plug and a port for a tranny temp sender.
the addition of a bigger cooler is a def improvement.
Also a shift kit, like TransGo Tugger or a upgraded VB def strengthen the 4R100 auto trans

All 4R100s have the deep pan as I remember it. The 4x2 E4ODs had a shallow pan while the 4x4 E4ODs had a deeper pan.

All the 4R100's, I've dealt with, had the deep pad whether it was 4wd or 2wd. Parts house's info is not always correct.

Thanks guys, I bought the shallow, I'll take it back for the deep, before I tear it down.

I bought both. Didnt want to have to make a run in the middle. Cant remember which one I used but I just took the other one back after I was done and ready to go!
