I've been satisfied with my Tarus PT100 in S&W .40. I also like most of the various incarnations of the M1911 .45 ACP.
Revolvers are nice but have an issue. If, God forbid, an assailent grabs it odds are good that you can't shot because the cylinder won't cycle. That, and I prefer the ease of reloading and auto.

460429_freak - I am glad to hear you liked the .45 ACP. Personally, I am cut between the .40 S&W and the .45 ACP. To be honest, I also don't like the relvover. Sadly though if your opponent / assailant grabs any gun, your pretty much screwed unless you either have 1) a backup, or 2) it's different style of firing than the standard M9, M1911, or similar. (M9 is the army's 9mm standard issue pistol)
I would suggest that if you plan on using this weapon for concealed or open carry, go and buy yourself a couple boxes of "training ammo" this ammo I suggest to either be the same grain or the same thing as you plan to actually carry with. The only true way I find to see how a gun is going to react is to actually shoot the round I use.
What round to use? I personally carry the heaviest Federal Hydra-Shok rounds possible for the specific caliber. If your using a .45 ACP, make sure that it's able to handle the +P that some of the Federal Hydra-Shok's have.
Also, make sure that your able to get your hands on it effectivly, and work all items of it. I have huge meat cleaver hands, so I can use pretty much everything (Haven't shot a DE yet, and interested in doing so if anyone has one... I got many rifles/pistols if someone wants to go shooting once the weather warms up)
If you have any questions, let me know. I myself have just gotten into reloading, so I am looking into bullet weights, effects, and velocity. I do however have at my disposal two people who are pretty much experts in the categories.
Take care and let me know if you need anything.
Matt
--- Edit ---
Also, the .45 ACP weapon you were firing is actually pretty easy to find, many manufacturers make them (springfield, kimber, etc etc) It's more as to what you want in one. For a 1911, expect to pay anywhere from 700 - 7000. It depends on the user, and what they want.
Take care.

I shoot a S&W .40
Honestly I love it. It has plenty of stopping power and it can punch a big hole in a soup can.
It never jams up on me. And the grips are comfy for my hands.
It took me about a month to decide on that particular gun. Every time I shoot it I think about how glad I am that I took my time deciding.

I like my P-6 its made by Sig Sauer In west Germany for the Police.
it is the same as the US P225.I bought it used for $325. I have put about 1000 target rounds through it never jammed once.when not shooting targets it is loaded with 115 gr. jacketed hollow points.
My next toy will be the walter p22.

Well, if you want some input, i'm here. I've shot more rifles and pistol's in more calibers than I know how to list, but mostly for sport shooting.
The only thing that I have to warn you about with the information that I will be giving you, is that it's comming from someone who is looking at it for either a tactical standpoint, or a self/home defence standpoint. That being said, my remarks are going to be a bit negative Vs. Wheel guns (Even though they are still good guns) Also, my choices for ammunition are going to be leaning more towards JHP's and Soft points.
However if you want information, I'll at least help you find the correct place to find the info, give you my semi-biased opinion, or give you some input. Now if you want tactical worth or self/home defence, i'm all for it.
Take care.

Beretta 9mm was issued to me as a side arm, but now have a Glock 19 "nice pistol".
I did not like the safety on the Beretta, plus had a few issues with the mags causing jam problems.
Also using a Colt M4 w/full auto setting, M240H 7.62 machine gun (on occasion in the door) and a PKM (Russian built 7.62X54 machine gun) normaly in the door, w/200 rd feed box.
And always have a AK laying near by 7.62X39 30 rd clip. And a unlimited supply of ammo!

I've shot a PKM (maybe it was the PKC) underarm once... it was fun.... as for the M240 series... I prefer the B model I have on my truck compared to the H you have on the door, but either way it's a nice weapon.
I had an Italian Beretta 92S.... friggen weird place for a mag drop. Just for fun on the range though. I like the Issue M9 though, I'll have one for those days I really don't want to carry my .40 or .45 back home.
AK? I got about 40 over here, and destroyed (I know i know... I want at least one to take home with me) countless. Not to mention all the other things I'd almost kill to be able to take home from over here.
