Question Transmission Fluid type

Good day all,

I recently purchased a 2002 F-250 with the 7.3L.
When I go home over the holidays I am going to do some routine maintenace including changing my tranny fluid and filter.

I do not do much heavy towing, mostly highway driving and light to moderate loads.

my question is this which type of fluid is this suppose to take? The owners manual I downloaded for the vehicle says use Mercon and not to use mercon V or a dual usage. Well I know fors discontinued Mercon and says that mercon V is backwards compatable and can be used in any application calling for Mercon fluid. Am I correct in understanding this?

So Mercon V fluid should be correct??

Has anyone had any good experiences with any other types of fluids?

Thanks for any input

The new Mercon V is compatible. I did a flush and fill using Valvoline Syn Power Mercon V, a synthetic ATF. I also used it for a power steering flush and to replace the X-fer case fluid. Not many miles on all this yet, but seems fine so far. I bought 26 quarts at NAPA and asked for a volume discount and thay gave me 10% off. 20 qts for tranny and about 3 qts each for X-fer case and power steering and had almost a qt leftover for topping off. My garage smelled like ATF for weeks even when all my mistakes were contained by plastic drop cloths.

Yes, you are correct. Use MERCON V.

Yes, ATF is used in both the T-case and power steering systems of these trucks.

Yep. ATF for the tranny, transfer case and power steering. I used Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF for the tranny and transfer case and going to use the rest for the power steering flush when the opportunity presents itself.

There are many folks on here who don't believe that the MERCON V is alright for the trannies that originally said use only MERCON.

If you look around, you'll find alot of both generic & name brands that, on the bottle, say MERCON/DEXRON-III and continue to use only that.

One popular argument for continuing to use only MERCON labeled fluid is said to be, that Ford waited till all the trannies that specified only MERCON were all out of warranty and then said, MERCON V is backwards compatibile.

Its a pretty good argument.

What is correct for the transfer case......straight ATF, or Mercon V?

Yeah, you goofed. Is it whining now?? You need to pull the line going to the brake booster and re-flush with ATF (it only holds about 2 quarts, so get three for a good flush. I'd park it on grass or something so you can turn the wheels back & forth while you pump the brakes. You don't want to wear flat spots in your tires doing it on concrete... You could also lift it, if you can do it safely.

Yeah you did. It calls for ATF, not PS fluid.

Hey guys, as I recall the deal was that if you are going to change to mercon V make sure that everything is drained including the torque converter and cooler lines. Either mercon or mercon V were OK but not some of each. Does that ring any bells or am i just old and forgetful?

I'm not sure about that, but there will always be SOME in there. I used the flush method Mark wrote up, and I'm having no problems almost a year later.
