Another nice day

This awesome fall weather is keeping me busy doing last minute work on buildings and yard work. It`s supposed to cool down in the next few days after this mild weekend.
Anyone else have important outside things finish up before the real winter weather hits?

I have to top up my '67 Matchless Scrambler motorcycle with Castrol oil. It's a British bike from the '60's and everyone who ever had an English big twin will know that they leak oil out of the crankcase almost as fast as you can fill them up. I have a aluminum (deep one) cake tin under the engine/gearbox to catch the leaking oil.

In contrast my '78 Yamaha big single (500cc) doesn't leak any oil.

Hate to say it, does anyone wonder why Japanese motorcycles took over the market from the British ?

But, even though the Matchless has oddly performing Joseph Lucas electrics ( we used to say, Joseph Lucas, Prince of Darkness), instruments that move erratically, sometimes and leak oil like a sieve (we used to say another British Bike the Royal Enfield, should be renamed the Royal Oilfield) it has lot's of quirky British charm and I can't imagine ever selling it.

Years ago I had a used 250 BSA for 1 weekend. I bought it on a Friday afternoon and by Sat. am I knew all about having that pan under the motor. The BSA went back to the dealer, Nicholson Brothers in Saskatoon, bright and early the following Monday morning, replaced by a new Kawasaki.
After that all my motorcycles were Kaws, Suzuki`s and with an odd Yamaha/Honda.
My two favorites were the ''900'' Kawasaki dressed with full fairings, hard saddle bags, tour pack and the 500 Honda XL.

The 900 Kawasaki was a great bike...so was the Honda 500XL...buddies had both of them. he Honda 500 single came out after my Yahama 500 single and was more refined...had a balance shaft to quell rev induced vibrations and was the first big single with an electric start. My Yamaha 500 (and Matchless) are kick start only.

Nicholson Brothers....were one of the top motorcycle shops in the world and I don't say that lightly. The Triumph factory in England used to fly the brothers over to assess their new bikes and they wrote Motorcycle Mechanics....one of the finest bike manuals ever written.

I understand that back in the '60's the most common 'not returned' library book in the Saskatoon Public Library was this book.

When I was a motorcycle rabid teenager (1960's) I used to send away for their catalog.

I could go on about the Nicholson Bros., their catlog, the uniqye bikes they brought in, but this is a Ford truck forum.

I love those Honda enduro bikes from the 80's. I can just imagine cruising along the road the shooting out in the ditch!

I did some backhoeing today, set up a bulk fuel tank, and played with my puppy quite abit. I actually got a whole ton of stuff done a few weeks ago, before I thought it was gonna get cold!

Nicholson Brothers had a good rep but I doubt it was for their shop work near the end of their operation. My brother had bought a new mc from them and when it died on him they didn`t get around to getting running over a year.... I wasn`t taking any chances with mine so it get shipped back there SAP, the every next business day and my cheque payment stopped!
You bought a bulk tank, how much, new or used? I`ve got some spare used ones kicking around here...........

I didnt know you were so much into bikes Morris, thats pretty neat!

I bought a 2 year old one from my grandpa, 300 gallon, with a stand hose, handle and filter for 100 bucks.

What size tanks do you have, and do they have stands? I could use another one for diesel one of these days, before the price shoots back up high!

That was a smokin` deal, the filter, nozzle and hose is worth that.
For now I`m keeping the 300 gallon one but I have one or two spare 250 gallon diesel oval tanks from oil furnaces.

Thats cool, I was thinking maybe you had a 500 or 1000 gallon one kicking around! My grandpa still has 2 more 300 gallon tanks and stands, with everything included and Ill probably get another one, was hoping for one that was a little bigger!

A 1,000 + gallon tank a pretty big one when the price drops..........

I know, it would last a long time if the price ever rose back up!! Plus my dump truck has at least 100 gallon tanks on each side, so it wouldnt take long to fill that thing up from a 300 gallon bulk tank!

Might try and deal on a bulk car for that though.

Since the best price for diesel fuel is at the Flying J that`s where I try to get all my fuel at, usually the Flying J is alot less than the bulk plants. I just wish they were on the east side of town.
They`re handy for you though so I wouldn`t even bother with bulk fuel though it is nice to have some here when I`m in a hurry and need fuel.

That's a shame about Nicholson Bros., near the end of their operation. I guess they were getting on in years.

Probably mail order was their thing. I don`t know the whole story but that`s what my brother thought.....

They had a lot of interesting bikes and their mail order catalog was quite extensive.
A relative of mine told me a story that back around the very late '40's, early '50's a friend tried out a Sunbeam 500 (more of a docile touring bike) from Nicholson's- Saskatoon and tested it against his Mercury flathead V8 on the highway. The Merc walked away from the 'Beam. That wouldn't do, so he went back and got a 1200cc Indian (may have been used) and they went back out to test against the Merc V8 on the highway. This time the Indian 1200 got the Merc (they were also used as police bikes-had a fair turn of speed). He bought the Indian.

Good test, they didn't have car or motorcycle road tests in those days.
