How to get black smoke on my 7.3idi diesel?
Im installing stacks on my 1990 F-250 in a couple of weeks, and therefore I was wondering how I could get rich black smoke to come out of my exhaust stacks
any body that knows how to do this?
At this time there is noe visible smoke at all from my engine..
Thanx

Scroll down to the pre-powerstroke diesel page. There have been plenty of posts there on turning up the injector pump and on fitting stacks.
You can post your question there or do a search for the information. Good luck.

this does not sound like a very smart thing to do.
it is a ticketable offense in some states.
it is bad for the air.
it is just not right.

i see where all these people are coming from, but its not always bad..look at "performance" trucks at the strip or at a truck pull who boil out enough smoke to choke a flock of geese in the air..im not real sure how to accomplish this task, ill ask my friend when he gets up he has a 93 that pours it out at full throttle im pretty sure all he did was bigger injector, code g maybe? and he had our local diesel performance shop tune his fuel pump

Those performance trucks are designed with all out performance in mind with no care for the environment. When the daily drivers get done at the track they are re-tuned so that they do not blow smoke on the street.
That said, not all performance trucks blow smoke. The current world speed record holder Gale Banks did not blow any smoke when making his record speed run.

Black smoke is just unburned hyrdocarbons from excessive fuel. The tuner drag trucks dump all that black smoke most likely because the higher EGT's helps build even more boost which makes more power. This would have no effect on a normally aspirated diesel, just a waste of fuel. More fuel without the more air to burn the fuel is pointless.

I'm thinking you'd better move this thread to the diesel section, or join a forum that deals only with diesel power.
I own a 470hp 12.7 l diesel. It's setup to pull. That's what I do. I can pull 108,000 lbs up an 8% grade and mine ain't belchin' black smoke (I get a puff on shifts). Black smoke may look cool, but as I said earlier, it's a sign of a poorly tuned engine.
