a hummm... new to powerstorke

hello, Well i did it just go my 1st powerstroke 1997 f-250. was that a step up or down from my 1994 f-350 idi anyway ... with the powerstorke i found that there is a humm that gets louder with higher RPM .. is that engine? or tranny? (auto) normal or not? and what tips are there with owning a turbo. i noticed the turbo only really spools at liek 2500, any way i can make it louder

Thanks
Dave Ford

Could you describe the hum a little more. Doe sit only happen in gear? or in park as well? Sound like its from the engine compartment?

You might try removing the belt and run it. That will either rule out or point toward a idler pulley, alternator or other belt driven parts. Also does the down pipe coming off the turbo to the under truck exhuast look like 3 inch round or does it have a seam on each side and look flat. I am just wondering if the DP has been replaced (with 3 inch pipe) and its rubbing the firewall.

rip out all the exhaust, rip off the intake. throw a 3inch down pipe on it and 4 inch strait pipe exhaust. install a 6637 intake filter on it. throw a chip in it a good set of gauges and let the turbo sing you down the road.
oh by the way welcome to PMS

LOL by the way- PMS = powerstroke modification syndrome...
In my opinion you made a step up. the IDI's are good engines, but the direct injection powerstroke (yours) is more powerful, efficient, etc.
The intake and exhaust will make your turbo spool much better. mine sings from idle to redline... and i love it...
Where are you from?
I cant help you with the sound, but there are plenty of guys that can. this is an awesome forum, and has a wealth of knowledge. Welcome.

Is there any chance your hum might sound like a restricted exhaust from the Exhaust back pressure valve? It will make the exhuast sound almost like a hiss. I am just trying to knock out the easy fixes first.

if it does it in any gear of the tranny, me thinks it's in the engine.
Are there any other symptoms that go with it?
what does the Oil pressure gauge say when this happens?
regular oil changes?
any check engine lights associated?
just trying to cover all the bases.
Do you have any way to check the fuel pressure? if so, what is it?

If he did it with the truck in neutral, it's not in the driveshaft.

Whew. that's cold .
I forget how to check fuel pressure, but i think i recall it being a scrader (sp?) valve
No wastegate on this turbo.
does the truck seem to have decent power?
