hey I've got an 01 lightning with a little noise on early start-up...wondering about proper oil currently using 5-30 synthetic and I'm afraid it's not lubing well enough for early morning start-up...plus engine seems to take off a little more than what I'm used to hearing.. any suggestions greatly appreciated... also the truck is located in n. ga. area will be partially garaged [carport] for winter but could be warehoused. thx, bdinc94

Hey there I work for a Ford dealer and unfortunatley the quality of Fram filters has gone down in the past few years. I have found that on several occassions that a slight rattle on start up can be cured by using a Motorcraft oil filter due to it having the right check valve built into it. I think that the K&N and some of the other high quality filters have the right valve as well. I would try that first. You can get a Motorcraft oil filter at Wal-Mart for under 4 bucks it takes a FL-820-S filter. Hope this helps.

Evilbeast doc comments-
that motor is a 5.4, and that motor is known for a valve rattle on fire up as well as the blower on that motor also makes a slight noise until the gears and rotors warm up. no matter what oil you are using the motor is always going to have a dry start unless you have a way of priming the motor first. the comments on oil filters is true. but for the most part no one brand is better than another nowadays. on another note, how many miles are on it, what is your oil change interval, and how long do you hear this noise? all of these are things that you need to look at. how hard is it driven, and is it driven for less than 10 miles and on top of that does it get to operating temp when the noise stops? big hp motors like that one dont cope well with being driven short distances and not getting to temp. this is also the case with diesel engines that have to have the turbos heat up before driving, and cool down to prevent oil from coking in the impeller housing. same prospect applies here, that motor needs to warm up before driving and also cool down when parked. i generally go with 2 minutes cool down, and how ever long it takes the motor to come to normal temp. any more info you can provide will help in finding a solution to your problems.
have Donnie (3bc) get in touch with me, he knows how, if you ever have any questions or problems.

Mine grew up, now she has me washing her tires, enjoy them while you can. Now my little girl(25) has a little boy(4months) and i am going to teach him how to wash tires. It is just a circle.
