I have a 99 ranger xlt, 2.5, and the blower motor works on all 4 speeds, BUT, there doesn't seem to be any difference in speed of the fan between pos.1,2 or 3--and then pos.4(high) you can hear the fan kick up to a higher speed. Is this the resister gone bad, or the switch itself. Have not spent any time on this problem, just thought of the resister, like the old days, when the 70's cars had this problem...Any help on this is GREATLY appreciated......
One way to begin checks would be with a meter on the plug to the blower motor. Just unplug it & then read the voltages with each of the switch positions. I'm thinking you MIGHT have some kind of short on the switch track however unlikely it seems. More likely the resistor has one effective value. My predictions come not from experience but from trade school studies leading to IT world. So take all this with a grain of salt.
he first thing I would check is the blower resistor which is in the cab air intake box under the hood on the firewall. Also check the wiring connector to the resistor.
Thanks for the help-got a chance to pull the resistor. What a fight-the plug was rusted solid to the resistor. Checked it late last Sunday-cleaned it up as well as I could -worked good for a couple of days-going to be replaced as soon as the weather permits...

Still haven't replaced the blower motor resisitor..works on 3 speeds now-better than 2-was rustier than a nail in a fence post!!!Will probably replace in the spring...
