I have been looking into a new tank for my F1 1950 panel. My original steel tank is OK but has a fair amount of rust and crap in it. I know about restoring the tank with products to clean it and seal it, but was also looking for a more permanent fix.
Classic-Haulers (Home - Classic Haulers F-1 Parts) has a new aluminum tank for the 48-50 F1 panel trucks. It looks pretty good, but a little pricey ($450) plus the straps. It is supposed to be a direct fit for the OEM panel tank, including the same sender pattern.
I have also seen reproduction steel tanks for the 48-40 panels (I can't remember where now). It's pretty much impossible to find any old radiator shops who will still have the equipment to boil them out. I am not sure which way I will go. I have not seen a stainless steel version of that tank, but if someone had one at a reasonable price, I would probably buy it.
My fuel filter and sediment bowl of the fuel pump catches most of the crap before it gets into the carb, but having a clean tank is something I want in the future.
While $450 might seem a little much to spend for a gas tank, to some, consider the cost of the tow bill if you found yourself stranded away from home with a clogged carb. It could be the cheapest insurance you ever bought. Not to mention the value of the peace of mind it will bring. And you know, if that was the price of those really cool wheels we were looking for, we'd jump on it in a minute. Just a thought.
