Inner Fenders in or out???

I have a 1993 F-250 4x4 and I am starting to slowly fix it up. I was taking off the chrome molding and noticed the fender is starting to rust out just like it is over the rear tires. I was thinking about taking out the inner fenders so I could clean it out better when I wash it or will this just cause a bigger problem because more dirt and mud will be getting up there? Looks to me that dirt and mud make their way up on the inside lip of the fender and since you cant see it with the inner fender there it never gets washed so it is starting to rust. What should I do leave the inner fenders or take them out? If I take them out will I be causing anyother problems? Thanks in advance.

The plastic inner fender is the only thing protecting the engine electrical from water and dirt coming off the tires, and there are also some engine bay parts mounted on it. Removing them probably isn't really an option on a street truck.

I believe the OP is only talking the rears?

I'd leave em in, I spray water up over the top of them and down through the stake pocket opening in the top of the box over the rear wheel (all of them), all directions until the water runs clear.

Still rusts but takes longer and not as bad, here in Mi. or rather Kent county, Mi. road salt is used heavily. I wish they'd just use sand........

No you don't. Our county pretty much only uses sand. Don't wish for that. Salt is good (at least they use salt in the cities).
