16" wide tire for 12" wide rims? Ok to use 9.75"?

So I might be able to get some 35" x 16" wide (16.5"wheel) boggers for cheap. I will need this for a f150 5x5.5 pattern. I know I can find the correct 12" wide wheels with the bolt pattern, but I can get some 16.5x 9.75" wheels for next to nothing with the right pattern already. Will it be ok to run these tires on the thinner rims? Please let me know what you think as I will need to let the guy know before the weekend is over...thanks.
