I used to put concrete blocks in the back when I had a 2wd. Since I have a 4X4, I just lock in the hubs, and shift it into 4X4 when I need to. If you've got a 2wd, or a snow plow, then weight would be important. Some guys with the plows around here use bulk sand and spread it when they scrape a lot off. I would rather use sand than salt. Just my opinion. When I was a kid, my Dad would keep a half load of firewood in his pickup.

Can't do the firewood thing as often with the emerald ash borer thing going on.

300-500 lbs is plenty.
I didn't use weight in my 2wd either. Only time I put any in was my s10. It needed it, being so light.

One thing to remember with the weight is that it should be a secure load. What would happen to fire wood if you got into a wreck. You would be luck to still have a head attached to your shoulders when it is all done. Sand bags still aren't easy to secure but it can be done.

I never put weight in the box in the winter that's what 4x is for but I can see if you had a plow on it would be different story. If I did need to have weight though I think it would have to be a brand new quad runner LOL I think a 750 would be enough weight LOL

The best place to put the weight is between the wheel wells.

My father always had a box like thing that fit over the wheel wells and you could put weight in the middle. Think of 2 H's stuck together.
Also kept things in the front from sliding to the back and the things in the back from sliding to far foward.
This also kept the weight over the wheels and not from floating the front end.
Weight in my truck at the very back will float my front end a bit. its kinda fun. haha.
