another tranny question (this is a good one)

Saturday nite after a little 4wd action the F 150 acted up.

Played on the power line road for about 15 min. Came off the trail back to the road. It is a rutted, steep hill. Really slow going, 2wd 1st gear. Turned at the end of the road onto highway, shifted from 1st thru OD no prob, maybe 300 yards later going up the hill the truck started to slow down, would not shift out of OD. Full throttle in OD around 1200 rpms. It slowed down to 15 mph then all of a sudden as it was about to completly stall it kicked into 1st and rocketed off. Drove 50 miles home no other issues. What could be the culprit? Overheating on the long slow hillclimb? I dunno, HELP PLEASE.

Also on a side note, earlier in the day the truck was idling in gear and idle dropped really low almost to the point of stalling and then resumed normal idle. Could these problems be related?

Only weight in the truck was myself and wife and 2- 5 gallon gas cans full in bed.

No computer mods, just a flowmaster muffler.

No check engine light, etc. all systems seem normal except for the above mentioned.

87 octane gas, no ethanol in fuel.

Synthetic oil.

Normal fluid levels.

2008 F 150, reg cab 4.6, auto, 4000 miles. 33" tires. 3.55 gears.

Sounds like the converter clutch may not be releasing for whatever reason, I would suspect the TCC solenoid. It would be a great help if a scanner with data stream could be used during the time of the problem, converter slip can be monitored.
