I bought a 92 F150 last Sunday with a 302 5sp and a 4x4. It also has 4:10 gears. It came with p235/75/r15 tires and rims. The speedo is off and with the low gears it seems that it had bigger tires on it before. It also has a 2 to 4 inch suspension lift. Not sure how much. Looks like a skyjacker lift. Got a deal on some 33/12.5/R15 wheels. Would this work ok?
The rear end gears should have no effect on the speedometer on our trucks. It will on the older ones though. The only thing could be the tire size, but 235/75/15 is the factory size. What size tire does it say came on it in the door jamb?
Thanks guys, The door jam sticker is gone so not sure what was on it originally. Got the gear size off the pumpkin tag. Only paid $1300 for the truck. Needs a tune up and antifreeze flushed otherwise runs good. Has 133k on it. The tires and rims are off a CJ. He wants $300 for everything. I will measure for sure to see if the rims fit. But I think they should.
Tires and wheels should switch. Personally, I would get rid of those nasty 4.10's and go with a more economical 3.31 ratio and keep the 235's. In fact, tell you what..let me help you out and swap you front and rear's with my 95 (you do the work of course) and that'll get you those econo gears. Oh, and you'll have to tell me where those wheels and tires are too just cause I am curious. I only offer this cause you are in MN too and I am just a heck of a nice guy.
LOL. I just bought it for a fun truck to play with. Only live 8 miles from work so don't really car about mpg. Would rather have power and something to play with. Should be fun with the bigger tires and 4.10's. Will let you know about the tires after I buy them. Ha ha.
Well, gee, thanks alot. That's what I get for being a nice guy. The gearing on these trucks will not affect the speedo reading but the tire diameter does. It is pretty easy to check (do a search for PSOM), but I would not change it until you do some homework on how it is set because you are limited on the number of times it can be changed (am guessing with the lift it is set for the 33's already...you can verify this easily). If you get annoyed with this complex process, I can still help you out with the gearing change and I will even reset it for you @ no extra charge!
Thanks for the info, I was thinking that it was set for bigger tires too. When I am going 65 my speedo reads 80. I will see how it does with the 33's. Going to keep my 4.10 though lol.
