Steve - yeah, that's kinda what I was thinking, that I might have a 70, but the casting has the 60 on it. Someplace along the line, someone just put on 3" shoes instead of 2 1/2" ones. But, the upside is, the drums, if within tolerance, won't need turning - they are worn evenly across the 2 15/16" depth! Every dark cloud has a silver lining...

The Camper Specials had 3" brakes all the way around. That and the underbed camper harness were the major items of the package.

I haven't been able to find this anywhere...is there someplace? I can't understand why they would have 3" brakes, while the drums are only 2 15/16" deep. It makes them rub on the one edge, and hang out 1/16" past the drum on the other. Can't see that happening...were the drums different?

I spent about 5 hours with Roger, over the course of 2 days, P/M'ing back and forth.

He sent me all the info. The rear axle he has is a Dana 60 (DOTA-BJ = 3.73-1).

The drum surface width is 2 15/16" wide, this is the size that uses 2 1/2" wide brake shoes

What we found was some goofball installed 3" wide brake shoes into the F250's drums.

Ford_Six: No F250, Camper Special or otherwise, came with 3" brakes.

There is not one application in the parts catalogs that show 3" brakes on any F250. Not 1953/72, not 1973/79.

Only 1967/79 F350's with Dana 70's came with 3" brakes (rear only after 1972).

1966/72 F250 Camper Specials all came with 12" X 2 1/2" brakes front & rear as part of the C/S package.

1965 F250 Camper Specials came with 12 1/8" x 2" brakes, as this was the only size available.

These same 12 1/8" x 2" brakes were used on non Camper Specials, 1966 thru 1972.

Yes, and while I didn't mention the part numbers, I did give you the brake drums brake shoe surface width for both the 2 1/2" & 3" brakes.

Here are the specs again, with the Ford part numbers.

D1UZ-1126-B .. Rear Brake Drum / Fits: 1966/72 F250 with 12" x 2 1/2" rear brakes / Brake shoe surface width: 2 15/16"

D1TZ-1126-A .. Rear Brake Drum / Fits: 1965/72 F250 with 12 1/8" x 2" rear brakes / Brake shoe surface width: 2 5/32"

Bill,

Is there anyway to identify which drum I have without pulling it? I use my truck frequently and don't want to yank all that stuff apart if I don't have to.

Thank you,

Dan

1970 F250, correct?

12 1/8" x 2" rear brakes = the width of the rear drum is: 3 5/16"

12 x 2 1/2" rear brakes = the width of the rear drum is: 4 5/16"

1966/72 F250: Whatever the rear brake shoe size is, the front will be the same, and vice versa, unless disc brakes [optional on all '68/72 2WD models] are present.

Dan, the 2 1/2" drum sticks out further from the tire, on the inside. Also, in the picture below, you can see the top is very angled towards the studs. Not so much on the 2" from what I've seen. It's a LOT flatter. When you look under the rear, towards the tire, it seems like it looks a little funny, like it sticks out too far, from other vehicles.

Wish I could describe it better - I have a picture at home, but I'm at work. I'll try to post it tonight when I get home after midnight. It's the 2 1/2" ones. You 'll be able to see how it looks a "little" funny, compared to what most other cars/trucks look like.

Also, you can go to NAPA (napaonline.com), submit 1971 F250, and look up the rear brake drums - they have them listed for both 2 and 2 1/2" brakes. They have pictures of both flavors. Probably the easiest way. At least, then all you have to pull is a tire...

NumberDummy: yes, it's a '70, thanks again for the info.

rcav8or: Thank you for the pic. My initial impression is that I have the narrower brakes. I swapped a front tire last week and I don't recall seeing the taper as it's shown in your pic, but I wasn't paying attention at that time! I'll look at the NAPA site and compare when I take the spare tire off and put the regular one back on. I think I'll wait till the temps are out of the 30's with rain.
